performance problem?
Hi,
I'm running dovecot on a small server. I put all my mail from the last
10 years on it (approx. 160 mb).
I'm seeing terrible performance. Sometimes, my client needs several
minutes to display a message. This is with mutt, thunderbird and
evolution. Copying an outbound message to the Sent IMAP folder (15k
messages) typically takes a few minutes, but can be quite fast on
occasion

Looking to upgrade from .99.14 to 1.0alpha5
Hi all,
I was looking to upgrade my dovecot .99.14 installation to 1.0alpha5
today and bumped into an issue.
My setup is on Mac OS X 10.4 and I am using
After reading http://wiki.dovecot.org/UpgradingDovecot , I created a
default dovecot.conf file with the following information grabbed from
my prior installation:

vpopmail directory permissions denied
I've moved from a postfix setup to a qmail/vpopmail setup
I've setup the dovecot.conf file for vpopmail
That works fine, users can log in, but the problem is when they go to see their
folders.
Nothing is there. INBOX, Drafts, nothing. This is using any imap client, imp,
evolution, outlook, outlook express
This is using 99.14 and
the latest vpopmail/qmail

Controlling Dovecot with Webmin
Dear Sir
I have just setup a Fedora 4SE server, with Webmin - latest production
release and Dovecot .99.14.
The only way to start dovecot is to be logged into the server as root -
locally or ssh, and type the dovecot command.
>From Webmin - logged in as ROOT, when I attempt to start Dovecot it tells me
that it can't because it can not open the config file - permission denied.

Permission denied but works anyway
I've just updated from 99.14 to 1.0.a3 on a FreeBSD box. Everything went
fine, except for a bit of flakyness from Thunderbird. When first
checking a mail box in Thunderbird (running on Win2k), I get a message
saying that the command can't be carried out and the server answered
"Permission denied". I click OK and everything works fine. As long as
Thunderbird stays open, the

MD5-CRYPT passwords in a MySQL Database
First of all, hello to the list.
I'm currently migrating from a /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow based
configuration to a MySQL based one using dovecot 99.14 on debian sarge.
The problem is that the /etc/shadow containes both DES encoded (Crypt)
and md5 based passwords. I've set the default system to be Crypt, and
have added {MD5-CRYPT} in front of the md5 passwords in place of the $1$

Bit of a Newbie Question
Apologies in advance - I'm sure there's something quite obvious I'm not
doing correctly, but since I'm unable to resolve the problem myself....
I've installed Dovecot 99.14 on FreeBSD-CURRENT using the Dovecot
FreeBSD port. My "network" consists of a cable modem connected to a
router which is in turn connected (only) to my computer. My ISP assigns

slow execution times using spec_server
hi all
I''m seeing strange behaviour when running specs using spec_server.
They take longer to execute, and it looks like none of examples are
being run. here''s the output for a simple spec file using just the
spec command:
----------
foo at holly:~/rails/allison$ time ruby/script spec spec/models/listing_spec.rb

CERT Advisory CA-99.14 - Multiple Vulnerabilities in BIND (fwd)
For those who are unaware...
[mod: This whole bind affair has gone a bit out of hand. Elias from
Bugtraq found "public" info indicating the problem. ISC/CERT were
working on releasing the bugfix together with the fix. Now everybody
is scurrying to get fixes out now that "the public" knows about this.
As far as I know, Red Hat (& Caldera) made a new RPM, based on the

Very slow rsync to gluster volume UNLESS `ls` or `find` scan dir on gluster volume first
Hi,
I have been working on setting up a 4 replica gluster with over a million
files (~250GB total), and I've seen some really weird stuff happen, even
after trying to optimize for small files. I've set up a 4-brick replicate
volume (gluster 3.13.2).
It took almost 2 days to rsync the data from the local drive to the gluster
volume, and now I'm running a 2nd rsync that just looks for

dovecot and vpopmail
Hello
Does dovecot know to expand %d in default_mail_env to
the default vpopmail domain in case the user logs without
attaching the @domain in his login ?
I last tried this on an old dovecot and this didn't work...

problem with thunderbird
Hi all, I've a problem with thunderbird 1.0.6/7/1.5 and dovecot pop3
I've tried dovecot alpha 3 and 1.0 stable but neither one is capable of
downloading mails.
Nothing is written into the log.
I've tried also to delete dovecot.index* and dovecot-uidlist into the
Maildir directory.
The cur directory contains more than 8100 messages (single files)

strange sar statistics: total CPU 90% in userspace, but CPU 0 and 1 only 1%
Hi Centos Users
The server (ProLiant DL380 G5, Centos 4.3) was not responsible anymore
(SSH), fans rotated at full power and the console was blank. After
restart it seems to be fine.
Now I am analyzing sar statistics (in system logs nothing special,
unusual). The hardware monitoring with HP tools didn't work.

MMX and extended-MMX acceleration patch for encoding
Hello,
attached is a gzipped patch file to the lib/mcomp.c source file of theora
(as of AnonCVS current version) that implements MMX and extended-MMX
optimizations in the most frequently used functions of the encoder (as
shown by gprof).
This is more a proof of concept than a real request for inclusion into the
source tree. My personal intent was more to look deeper into the MMX
instruction set

Fast in MySQL console, slow in ActiveRecord
Has anyone experienced an ActiveRecord query being much much slower than
running the equivalent
query in the MySql console?
I am running a simple "group by" query with one condition on a table with 7
million records. When
I run EXPLAIN it says that it will have to scan over all the records - well
that''s OK. In the MySQL
query it takes 1min 40secs which is OK for me - this

Poor performance on NFS-exported ZFS volumes
I''m seeing some pretty pitiful performance using ZFS on a NFS server, with a ZFS volume exported (only with rw=host.foo.com,root=host.foo.com opts) and mounted on a Linux host running kernel 2.4.31. This linux kernel I''m working with is limited in that I can only do NFSv2 mounts... irregardless of that aspect, I''m sure something''s amiss.
I mounted the zfs-based
