Zlib plugin: changing compression save level
Hi,
I have running dovecot 2.1.15 with zlib plugin enabled and "zlib_save_level = 6" since about 2 years now
without any problems.
What happens if I now change the zlib_save_level to 9?
Should that work without any problems, or become the current saved "*.m" files
incompatible or unreadable?
Thanks
Urban

Security hole #3: zlib plugin allows opening any gziped mboxes
zlib plugin allows opening gzipped mboxes as read-only mailboxes.
However when using it, the mailbox name checks are bypassed so it's
possible to open for example "../otheruser/somefile.gz". Only valid
gzipped mbox files can be opened, and only if their name ends with
".gz".
You can fix this by upgrading to v1.0.rc29 (available soon) or with this
patch:

zlib plugin
hi,
Could anyone give some info on this plugin?
When i read the wiki (http://wiki.dovecot.org/Plugins/Zlib) i'm still
left with some questions...
I use Maildir to store my mails, if i enable this zlib-plugin,
should i 'manually' compress all messages?
or wil the uncompressed messages still be accessible by dovecot?
wil new messages be compressed automagically?
how should the

zlib plugin weirdness
Hello,
I'm trying to get the zlib plugin working on my 2.0 server. I started
with an mbox that Dovecot can read just fine. Then I gzipped it, and
now Dovecot complains that it's corrupted:
Error: Next message unexpectedly corrupted in mbox file

1.1 and the zlib plugin
Hello,
I've been playing around with using namespaces to change the way
messages are stored. My idea was to use mbox for archival stuff, like
this:
namespace private {
separator = .
hidden = no
inbox = yes
prefox =
location = maildir:%h/Maildir
}
namespace private {
separator = .
hidden = no

pine vs dovecot-zlib (mbox.gz)
Hello!
Always reproducible pine vs dovecot-imap-mbox.gz scene has weird errors.
- Initial message is OK: [Folder "SAVE.gz" opened with 211 messages
READONLY]
- Some mails at the end are listed correctly, others are listed with
empty sender/size/subject (just numbering).
- All mails have no bodies. Full header command produces total blank
screen. Even before any error message.

openssh 4.2p1 zlib compression broken for old clients
Hello OpenSSH developers,
openssh 4.2p1 breaks old openssh clients up to 3.4p1 when they try to use compression:

zlib plugin bug?
Hi there,
got a problem with the zlib plugin, just wanted to test it on a
test-mailserver, configured like in the wiki
(http://wiki2.dovecot.org/Plugins/Zlib) and restarted the server.
I've send an email to a blank maildir++ mailbox, the file is saved as
gzip compressed file, but the "Z" flag is missing in the filename.
Is that a bug in the plugin, or in dovecot?
Greetings, Jan

zlib plugin
Good evening, folks,
Well, here at least. ;) I recently found out by accident about support
for gzip compressed mbox files. While this is great for archives to keep
wasting of space down to a minimum, unfortunately it is read only -- no
support for rw access.
Is implementing write access by any chance planned for future releases?
Now for the spoiler. :) I mentioned, I found out about this

Recovering expunged but not purged e-mails from mdbox with zlib compression
You can use mdbox_deleted driver to access mails with refcount 0. See

disable zlib via config to allow per mailbox compression level
Hello
Dovecot v2.0.5
zlib_save_level = 6 # 1..9
zlib_save = gz # or bz2
Is there a config option to disable zlib, even if above config are in
place? If so please provide an example.
If no, would it be possible to add one? Like if zlib_save_level = 0
disable zlib. So one can configure per mailbox compression level via
sql database.
