Large dataset operations
Hello all, I'm new to R and trying to figure out how to perform calculations on a large dataset (300 000 datapoints). I have already made some code to do this but it is awfully slow. What I want to do is add a new column for each "rep_ " column where I have taken each value and divide it by the mean of all values where "PlateNo" is the same. My data is in the following

Understanding of Johansen test.
Dear all, I am struggling to understand the johansen test procedure in the context of co-integration in time series. Yes I understand that this forum is not directly statistics related but still I am posting here hoping that I would get som help. The error correction representation of a VAR[p] model can be written as: Delta y[t] = A[0]*y[t-1] + A[1]*Delta y[t-1] +..............

Laggy and faulty Samba server
Hi, I've installed Samba a few times, and I always have the same problem - except now I really want to get rid of it. My Samba server is very, very, very slow on occations (not always), and some times it's really annoying. What happens is that it doesn't seem to be online for a period of 5-10 seconds once every minute! If I'm copying huge files, it's working great, but when

[RFC] Add support for options -fp-model= and -fp-speculation= : specify floating point behavior
Intel would like to contribute a patch to implement support for these Intel- and Microsoft -fp options. This message is to describe the options and request feedback from the community. -fp-model=[precise|strict|fast|except[-]] and -fp-speculation=[fast|strict|safe] This contribution would dovetail with the llvm patch "Teach the IRBuilder about constrained fadd and friends" which is

On efficiency, Vectorize and loops
In my last e-mails, I have asked for help regarding 1. 'defining functions inside loops' 2. 'integrating functions / vector arithmetics' 3. 'vectors out of lists?' 4. 'numerical integration' Since some of these topics seemed to be relevant (I'm guessing by the # of replies I got), I'm posting a modified section of my code. Any thoughts on improvements would

Migrating from uw-imapd to dovecot
We recently switch from up-imapd to dovecot But many users are reporting that they cannot access certain mail folders. The log file has: imap(dws): Sep 14 00:06:19 Error: File isn't in mbox format: /home/research/dws/mail/TaskDL The files in the logs are "MBX mail folders", not "ASCII English text" as are the folders that can be read under Outlook. Can anyone tell me

RE: [R] when can we expect Prof Tierney's compiled R?
If we are on the subject of byte compilation, let me bring a couple of examples which have been puzzling me for some time. I'd like to know a) if the compilation will likely to improve the performance for this type of computations, and b) at least roughly understand the reasons for the observed numbers, specifically why x[i]<- assignment is so much slower than x[i] extraction. The loops

macOS 10.13.6 error joining to Samba 4.8.3
Dear All, I have recently setup a completely new AD domain on my Linux server, running Samba 4.8.3. From the server, I can authenticate via kerberos and get users and groups through winbind etc. When I try to join a freshly installed Mac running macOS 10.13.6, I receive the error: "Unable to add server. Authentication server failed to completed the requested operation. (5103)" The Mac

writing tools that use light-markup
let's talk about writing tools that use markdown (or more broadly, another form of light-markup)... to begin with, there is the markdown "dingus"... from a demo perspective, it has been _fantastic_. it has provided interested observers a quick idea about the simplicity and the power of markdown. as a writing tool, it's a bit clunky; it will work, yes, but i'd doubt many

General protection error
G'morning, all Over the last few months I've had a few instances of log lines of the following type on a handful of servers: nscd[9301] general protection rip:2a9578dea0 rsp:405f1368 error:0 As far as I've been able to figure out, this is the kernel warning me that nscd has tried to write outside of its allocated memory. Since the current nscd is started at the exact same time as
