how to connect to a remote PostgreSQL database from R on mac osx
Hello List,
I would like to connect to a postgreSQL database on a remote server and I am wondering what is the best package to do that. I have just installed RpgSQL, RPostgreSQL, Rdbi and RODBC.
The handiest to me is RPostgreSQL but I don't see how to connect to a remote server with it. For sure I can connect to remote server with RODBC, but since I am on a Mac OSX 10.6, I have quite

R and PostGresQL
Sorry for the simple question:
What is the "standard" package for interfacing with PostGreSQL (most
up-to-date)? There appear to be at least three with different names:
Rdbi.PgSQL
RdbiPgSQL (available as part of BioConductor)
RPgSQL (On the home page, no longer maintained in favor or Rdbi)

R, PostgresSQL and poor performance
Hi List
Apologies if this isn''t the correct place for this query (I''ve tried a search of the mail archives but not had much joy).
I''m running R (2.14.0) on a Mac (OSX v 10.5.8, 2.66GHz, 4GB memory) and am having a few performance issues with reading data in from a Postres database (using RPostgreSQL). My query / code are as below

RPostgreSQL Loading Issues
I'm starting to seriously use R and have tried to solve this issue using
my reference books but I'm missing something simple. Running R-2.13.1 on
Slackware-13.1.
Trying to invoke RPostgreSQL so I can copy data from a postgres table to
an R data-frame. I installed RPostgreSQL and the library() command shows
it's present:

memory error in for loop
hi,
I have been attempting to run this script and am getting some strange
results. The script connects to a database and retrieves a series of
tables, using sequential sql statements. I have tested all of the sql
statements in the PostGreSQL terminal and they all return the desired
results. I place each table into a list and run a FOR loop for 'i' in
the list. The script generates

multi-line query
Hello,
I'm using package RpgSQL. Is there a better way to create a multi-line
query/character string? I'm looking for less to type and readability.
This is not very readable for large queries:
s <- 'create table r.BOD("id" int primary key,"name" varchar(12))'
I write a lot of code, so I'm looking to type less than this, but it is
more readable from

RpgSQL row names
Hello,
Using the RpgSQL package, there must be a way to get the row names into the
table automatically. In the example below, I'm trying to get rid of the
cbind line, yet have the row names of the data frame populate a column.
> bentest = matrix(1:4,2,2)
> dimnames(bentest) = list(c('ra','rb'),c('ca','cb'))
> bentest

PostgreSQL & DBI or ???
The only database access package I see on CRAN is DBI.
But is there a PostgreSQL driver for it yet? (where?)
There is no sign of an RPgSQL package on CRAN either.
What to do?
Thanks,
Bruce L.

I think there are problems with pg_config, the configure script of

dbWriteTable with field data type
Hello,
When I do:
dbWriteTable(con, "r.BOD", cbind(row_names = rownames(BOD), BOD))
...can I specify the data types such as varchar(12), float, double
precision, etc. for each of the fields/columns?
If not, what is the best way to create a table with specified field data
types (with the RpgSQL package/R)?

maximum string length in RdbiPgSQL and in R
Because my problem involves the RdbiPgSQL package, I sent a message
similar to this one to the Bioconductor list. But while awaiting
moderator approval of my message (because I am not a member of that
list), it occurred to me to send it to R-help as the problem may be more
general than just RdbiPgSQL.
Here's my situation:
I have been using RdbiPgSQL successfully for a year or two. I
