Errors in Compiling R
I am having trouble compiling R-1.1.0 on a Sun Ultra 60 machine
running Solaris 7. Suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I modified the CPPFLAGS and LIBS variables in the config.site file.
As far as I can tell, I have included all the non-standard headers
and libraries installed on my Sun station. My GNU stuff is installed
in /opt/Summertime_98.sparc/, and at the bottom of this

Truncating leading zeros in strings
I am new to R. I thing this will be simple, but I don't yet know my way
around.
I am generating character strings from the system clock that represent
integers, and I want to convert them to integer values. Strtoi works
well, except when there are leading zeros on the string. Could anyone
suggest a way to remove those leading zeros?
Thanks

According to the docs, the xmapDatabase() command should read the

bandwidth estimation using bw.SJ
Hello All,
When I use bw.SJ (based on Sheather & Jones, 1991) in R to estimate
the bandwidth for a highly skewed data, I get the following message:
"sample is too sparse to find TD". I played around with the parameters
such as no. of bins (nb), lower, upper (range over which to minimize) to
no avail. My sample size is 50,000.
Can anyone tell me what this means and of some

Fw: Re: Creating users via Perl Net::LDAP
Thanks for the input Mike,
I set the attributes, as best I could, to mirror those of another account created using the samba-tool per the howto. Reviewing the attributes of both accounts, I see nothing about them being "enabled" or "disabled."
For the password I used "userPassword," specifically with a utf8 encoding, per a previous message:

plotting muliple CI ellipses for EB estimates
I have empirical Bayes estimates for slopes and intercepts for a number of
subjects and I would like to plot the slopes and intercepts with confidence
ellipses. These ellipses would be based on the confidence intervals for the
slope and intercepts (forming the major and minor axis of each ellipse), and
the correlation in the slope and intercepts.

VoIP friendly Internet providers in Dallas and Philadelphia
Hi Everyone,
My experience is only with the Canadian providers. What options/providers
are there in Dallas and Philadelphia other than Verizon when it comes to
internet? Something in the order of at least 10mbps down and up - I
understand that and higher bandwidths are easily available in USA due to
vast fiber networks? The connection will be replacing a T1 and will be

Perform one-way ANOVA using standard deviation and mean
Hi! I need to perform ANOVA on a couple of data sets. The only information I have are N, Mean and Standard deviation. I am very new to R, so can someone point me to the right direction on where to go? Thank you very much.

Interpreting as.factor
When I run a linear regression and include a variable in the
regression with as.factor i.e.
lm(y ~x +as.factor(x1)
and i read the output as
as.factor(x1)1....
as.factor(x1)2...
etc.
how do i interpret the estimate for each level? Is this simply to be
regarded as a shift in the equation predicted by the intercept and
independent variable x?

Starting NONMEM (nmfe6) from R
Hello,
I have made an R script that prepares a NONMEM dataset and I would like
to start the NONMEM run right after the dataset is ready.
I am using windows XP, R 2.9.1 and NONMEM 6.
I have prepared a run.bat file that looks like this:
----------------------------------------
call K:\nmvi\NMdirectories.bat
call K:\nmvi\nmfe6 "path\control.txt" "path\output.txt"

Cisco gateways and hairpinning
Hello:
Has anyone on this list had to configure hairpinning on a Cisco
gateway running IOS 12.2 or 12.3 and using a PRI for connectivity
to the PSTN? If so could you tell me how it is done? I'm told this
is the source of my call transfer problems and yet I cannot find
clear instructions for how the configuration is done.
Thanks,Steve

Estimating correlation in multiple measures data
Dear R-helpers,
This may sound simple to you, but I'm a beginner in this, so please be
forgiving.
I have a following problem: two analytes were measured in patient's
blood on 4 occasions: ProteinA and ProteinB. How to correctly evaluate
correlation between ProteinA and ProteinB?
I tried:
x <- data.frame(Patient.ID=rep(1:10, each=4), Visit=rep(c(1:4),10),
ProteinA=rnorm(m=10,

how much performance penalty does this incur, scalar as a vector of one element?
I have been comparing R with other languages and systems. One peculiar feature of R is there is no scalar. Instead, it is just a vector of length one. I wondered how much performance penalty this deign cause, particular in situations with many scalars in a program. Thanks.
