trouble parsing a date using strptime()
Hi,
I am having a trouble parsing dates using strptime() that I get in the
format of year and week number. The data looks like this "201127" which
means year 2011 and week 27. I would like to graph this using ggplot but
then I get a gap between 201054 and 201101 so I thought I would just easily
convert it.
I tried to use strptime and as.Date and the format string of %Y%W but it

bootstrap means by strata
All -
I have an uneven set of replicates and would like to sample from this set X number of times to generate a mean for each grouping variable. I was thinking the boot package would be the thing to use, but now I'm not so sure ... given the discussion here:

write.xls
Hello, All:
The "writeFindFn2xls" function in the "sos" package tries to
write an Excel file with 3 sheets ('PackageSum2', 'findFn', 'call').
Unfortunately, it is often unable to do this because of configuration
problems that are not easy to fix. I've found 3 contributed packages
that provide facilities to write Excel files with

sqlFetch (RODBC) question
Dear all,
I've used RODBC a lot to read in files created in MS excel and access but
found a strange problem today: a variable in my data file contained both
numbers and text; sqlFetch would set text within a row of numbers to NA; but
if first 5 or 6 rows would be text then all numbers would be read in as NA.

Hello:
sort(c('A', 'b', 'C')) seems to produce different answers in R
interactive than in "R CMD check", at least under both Fedora 13 and
Windows 7 with Windows 7 sessionInfo() copied below:
In interactive, the result is c('A', 'b', 'C'); with R CMD
check, it is c('A', 'C', 'b'). This produced

passing function parameters into a 'with' statement to dynamically pick out columns
Hi,
I've built a function to generate plots and would like to be able pass in column names as a parameter. Here's a boiled down version of what I have right now:
pmts <- data.frame(date=c(1,2,3), all=c(5,6,7),maj=c(4,5,6),ind=c(3,4,5))
perc.mktshare <- function(df){
range1 <- floor(min(with(df, 100*ind/all)))
range2 <- ceiling(max(with(df, 100*ind/all)))

as.data.frame question
I'm using the RODBC library to read in an Excel file using the odbcConnectExcel function. I can read the Excel data prefectly, however all my character variables get converted to factors when using
my.data <- as.data.frame(sqlFetch(channel, "Sheet1"))
I've tried using
my.data <- as.data.frame(I(sqlFetch(channel, "Sheet1")))
but this creates just

I have some questions about the RODBC package.

leer ficheros excel en R en Ubuntu
Hola,
Pensé que esto iba a ser trivial en R, pero me estoy encontrado muchos con
mi problema en internet, y que las soluciones ofrecidas no terminan de
funcionar.
Estoy intentando leer un fichero .xls en ubuntu con los siguientes paquetes
y nada:
require(RODBC)
conn = odbcConnectExcel("madrid.xls") # open a connection to the Excel file
sqlTables(conn)$TABLE_NAME # show all sheets

Hello, I have some problems with RODBC and Excel in Win98
I am using R 1.6.2 and just upgraded RODBC to the last version on CRAN.
I have an Excel file with columns Number, Name, Sex, Age, FEV1 on Sheet

Now I open the channel to the file

Rioja package, creating transfer function, WA, "Error in FUN"
Hi, I am a new R user and am trying to construct a palaeoenvironmental
transfer function (weighted averaging method) using the package rioja.
I've managed to insert the two matrices (the species abundance and the
environmental data) and have assigned them to the y and x values
respectively. When I try and enter the 'WA' function though, I get an 'Error

Excel *.xls files, RODBC
I gather from reading the back-issues of r-help that it should be
possible (modulo a number of caveats) to read an excel (yuck!) file
into R using RODBC. I have obtained and installed ODBC and the RODBC
package, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to go about
it. Can anyone give me a simple recipe?
I have an excel file on cdrom, say:

rows, one of date, the other of prices:

It works pretty well but the only thing is that the datas stop at row 7530
and I don?t know why datas is a data frame that contains 7531 rows with the

Re ading Excel 5.0 files with RODBC?
Hi,
i'm trying to read some data from excel files but it seems that neither
xlsReadWrite nor sqlFetch (RODBC) doesn't like the format (Excel 5.0).
When i open the file in Excel and save it in a new format Excel 97 -2003
everything works fine.
Is it possible to use ODBC connection to open old format files, or i guess i
will have to open and save every file in Excel in new format, which

self-referential representations in S4
I'm trying to do the following:

I scanned the docs, but found nothing. The representation function has no
problem, it's the setClass function which gives the warning.
