Long for Loop- calling C from R - Parallel Computing
Hello everyone, I'm running the following for loop to generate random variables in chunks of 60 at a time (l), here h is of order in millions (could be 5 to 6 millions), note that generating all the variables at once could have an impact on the final results for(j in 1:h){ dat$t.o[seq(0,g1,l)[j]+1:l]<-dat$mu[seq(0,g1,l)[j]+1:l] + rnorm(l,0,dat$g.var[seq(0,g1,l)[j]+1:l]) } Is there any

Any existing functions for reading and extracting data from path names?
Hi helpeRs, I have inherited a set of data files that use the file system as a sort of poor man's database, i.e., the data files are nested in directories that indicate which city they come from. For example: dir.create("deleteme") for(i in paste("deleteme", c("New York", "Los Angeles"), sep="/")) { dir.create(i) for(j in

Equivalent of log file in R?
Hi everyone, Is there a way to make R save the workspace output (just the results, not the objects themselves) as you go? I'm running analysis that takes a long time to run and I want to be able to interrupt it without losing all the output to date. Is there an alternative to putting "save.image()" commands after every couple lines of code? Best, Tatyana

Math characters in column heading using latex() in Hmisc
Hi Everybody I want to print a latex table containing math characters in the column heading These are the formulae I want to use as column headings. It prints OK from TeX $\sum_{i}\sum_{j}C_{P,i,j,y}\times\mathit{FC}_{i}$, $XU_{alt,y}$, $n$, $\bar{C}_{P,y}$ My plan was to create a character vector with these and later rbind the values to them. When I create the vector like:

[Hmisc] Latex to pdf
I would like to print some tables and figures to a PDF device on a CentOS 5 vps. However, I cannot seem to get the latex function from Hmisc working. I followed the example, and got an error: sh: xdvi: command not found. I tried installing the 'tetex-xdvi' linux package, and now it returns: Error: Can't open display. I guess the reason for this is that the machine is a VPS terminal, so

A naive question about permutation tests in the coin package
Dear R helpers, I am trying to understand how to use the independence_test function in the coin package. I think I suffer from a misunderstanding about what the package does. Either that or I do not understand how to use it properly. Specifically, I cannot understand if I can test independence of arbitrary statistics. Take the following example: set.seed(10) d <- data.frame(y = c(rnorm(10,
