pdf() device uses fonts to represent points - data alteration?
Hello all, I discovered that the pdf device uses fonts to represent "points" symbols (as in plot(...,type="p",...) ). Namely it uses ZapfDingbats with symbol U+25cf. This can lead to problems when the font is not available, or available in another version (such as points being replaced by other symbols, or worst: slightly displaced). Furthermore, it also causes

PDFs and SVGs containing rasterGrobs don't display correctly in some other software
I've just been trying to post-process some R-created heatmaps using Inkscape, but I can't get them to display correctly in that software. To reproduce: library(grid) r <- as.raster(matrix(runif(25), 5, 5)) pdf("test.pdf") grid.newpage() grid.raster(r, interpolate = FALSE) dev.off() This figure should be a five by five block of grey squares. This is what I see in the R GUI

Options for generating editable figures?
Hello all, I'm using R to produce figures for people who want to be able to edit the figures directly, and who use PowerPoint a lot. I use a Mac, and I'd appreciate any advice about how to approach this. Here's what I've come up with so far: 1) I can use xfig() and then ask them to install Inkscape to edit the files. Downsides are no transparency and a learning curve with

Dear R-users When trying to import graphics from an pdf-file to a Vector graphics editor (I use Inkscape, but i've confirmed the same problem on adobe products), all points in the graphics turn out as "q"s. This example displays the beaviour: pdf(file="points are weird.pdf") plot(1:5) dev.off() When importing the file to inkscape, I get five neatly arranged little

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, Well, it seems like my gnome terminal can't interpret Korean translations very well. Or maybe it can and I don't know how to confirm it ? I tried the following encoding characters in the gnome terminal: Current Local (UTF-8) Korean (EUC-KR) Korean (UHC) Korean (JOHAB) and all I can see are question marks inside black rhombus. That

Application Design
Hi Railsers, How do you design your applications? Do you start coding HTML? Start with the controllers/models? Start in a program like photoshop/gimp/illustrator/inkscape? I start in inkscape, it''s a SVG editor. I sketch all the views of my application, and then I create the views that belong to one controller in RHTML. After that, I do the models/controller, and move on to the

Suggestiong for a tablet computer to run Centos-6/7?
I have an iPad Air. Nice kit and good battery life but experience has shown the iPad is just a little too opaque and network dependent for my taste. I was wondering if there existed a similarly sized/robust tablet that can run CentOS-6/7 that anyone would recommend? I am looking from something that I can take on international trips that I can scrub on a regular basis. But, I also desire the

draw borders of bars inside of the rectangles in a barplot
Dear R-users, I want to draw a barplot with beside=TRUE. One halve of the bars are drawn with a border, while the other halve are drawn without a border (i.e. filled bars vs. non-filled bars next to each other). Because borders are drawn around the bars, doing this leads to one halve of the bars being wider than the other halve, expanding across the 0-point of the y-axis. This problem emerges
