startx on console 2
I seem to recall that there is some special option to run X11 on <Alt-F2>
On this ClearOS system, their console sits on the default console. You
have to <Alt-F2> (etc.) to get a text login. Now that I have Xfce kind
of installed, I want to see it on the system console, and I thought that
just running startx would work.
It doesn't. Got some errors. And then I remembered years

Error running startx as non-root user
I've been looking online for resources that may help me, but I haven't found
anything that worked. I'm trying to run x as a non-root user. Any
suggestions?
I get the messages:
Fatal server error:
PAM authentication failed, cannot start X server.
Perhaps you do not have console ownership?

Hello everyone,
I have been having a vexing problem for a year, and I cannot solve it.
Hopefully, someone has a tip to get me over the hump to fix this once and
for all.
When I type "startx" from root, I get:

GUI black screen on login, startx works???
Hello,
I'm using a recent install of centos 7, no GUI customizations that I
recall. When I log in using the GUI it accepts my password and the mouse
appears on a black screen, like it is preparing the desktop, but the
desktop never appears. If I hit control-alt-f4 and log in using the command
line, and then execute startx, Everything seems to work perfectly.
What sort of troubleshooting

more newbie questions -- init 5 works, init 3 doesn't for "normal" users
OK, after 3 tries I got CentOS 6.6 installed (don't ask). Now something
very odd is happening. My regular user, me, can not login to level 3
without odd errors.
I get /home/<username> not found when it's there and setup with correct
permissions -- well here I am using it in run level 5 just fine!
So, my normal user is left logged in at /root. Even if I move over to

cmml is about metadate/annotations, how can it be replaced
by KATE ( which is mainly about subtitles as far as i can see?

I can ssh into a remote machine.
I can start X on that machine with startx
How do I then start firefox on that machine (from the ssh prompt) and
have it display on my machine in my office.
So I want to be using firefox on the remote machine but displaying the
screen output from firefox in my office.
Both boxes are running centos 5.
how is that done?

Santi,
In the second line of your function you have the following:
f <- numeric(length(x))
This sets the length of this numeric vector (i.e., "f") to the length of the vector "x".
Later, inside the function you assign to values to 4 elements of the vector "f".
This assumes that "f" is at least 4 element in length.
However, you define

Back to my Xwindows kernel panic
I have a newly built drive with 5.2 fresh install (that I will be
cloning shortly) in my DECtop and it is failing with X the same way the
upgrade from 5.1 drive did (not too supprising there).
In 5.1 X worked. I could startx from init 3 and get into GNOME. Also
VNC into the box and have a GNOME screen. With 5.2, I get a kernel
panic. Well I guess it is a kernel panic because once I run
