tree-drawing in R ?
Hello,
I wonder whether binary (rooted) trees with simple
labels (say, integers) can be drawn by some R-package?
Couldn't find one.
Just to make sure (since "trees" can be many things): I mean
those computer-science creatures, with roots and subtrees.
Thanks for your consideration in any case
Oliver
P.S. Perhaps there is some graph-drawing package? (Here a "graph"

Error analysis for circular data
Dear R users,
I would like to know if it is possible to calculate the Mean Error (ME),
the Root Mean-squared error (RMSE) and absolute error (MAE) for two
temporal series of directional data. Where Can I get documentation about it?
Thanks in advance

summary statistics for grouped data
Hello list:
Is there an easy way (preferably through one of the standard R packages) of obtaining summary statistics for grouped data? I could split the data into classes by hist, and then progressively calculate all the "columns" i need to obtain the mean and standard deviation, but i was looking for a single function that could do that with a data vector.
Thanks in advance,
jose

Reshaping data from wide to tall format for multilevel modeling
Hi,
I'm trying to reshape my data set from wide to tall format for multilevel
modeling. Unfortunately, the function I typically use (make.univ from the
multilevel package) does not appear to work with unbalanced data frames,
which is what I'm dealing with.
Below is an example of the columns of a data frame similar to what I'm
working with:
ID a1 a2 a4 b2 b3 b4 b5 b6

Help With Fleiss Kappa
Hi All,
I am using fleiss kappa for inter rater agreement. Are there any know
issues with Fleiss kappa calculation in R? Even when I supply mock data
with total agreement among the raters I do not get a kappa value of 1.
instead I am getting negative values.
I am using the irr package version 0.70
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks and Regards

Calculating Pseudo R-squared from nlme
I am fitting individual growth models using nlme (multilevel models with
repeated measurements nested within the individual), and I am trying to
calculate the Pseudo R-squared for the models (an overall summary of the
total outcome variability explained). Singer and Willett (2003) recommend
calculating Pseudo R-squared in multilevel modeling by squaring the sample
correlation between observed and

How to create MULTILEVELS in a dataset??
Dear R users
I have a data set which has five variables. One depenedent variable y, and 4
Independent variables (education-level, householdincome, countrygdp and
countrygdpsquare). The first two are data corresponding to the individual
and the next two coorespond to the country to which the individual belongs
to. My data set does not make this distinction between individual level and

R Issues with packages
You just need to READ the error messages and use Google.
Don't try to install tcltk.
The other two packages are not available through CRAN... they are Bioconductor packages. (Not supported here... use Google.)
And learn to post plain text in the future to avoid scrambling what you thought you sent before we see it. Read the Posting Guide.

Plotting 3 way Anova
Hi
I'd really like to get a bar plot showing the means of my anova data. I have looked everywhere and can only seem to find instructions for 2 way anova's.
I basically want to look at the mean condition of my subjects spilt by age, sex and year (as a factor rather than a continuous variable, hence Anova and not Ancova). and want to show it firstly as a bar graph with standard error. I

Multilevel model with lme(): Weird degrees of freedom (group level df > # of groups)
Hello everyone,
I am trying to regress applicants' performance in an assessment center
(AC) on their gender (individual level) and the size of the AC (group
level) with a multi-level model:
model.0 <- lme(performance ~ ACsize + gender, random = ~1 | ACNumber,
method = "ML", control = list(opt = "optim"))
I have 1047 applicants in 118 ACs:

strange behavior of matrix
Dear R list,
I have discovered a seemingly peculiar feature when using a matrix to
index itself (yes, this is strange code, which I have now modified to
be more reasonable).
#this makes sense
s <- matrix(1:3,nrow=1)
s[s] #all three elements are shown
#but when I try
s <- matrix(1:2,nrow=1)
s[1] #fine, the first element is shown
s[2] #fine, the second element is

diag(-1) produces weird result
Dear list
A strange bug in the psych package is due to the behavior of the diag function:
It gives the expected values for 1, a vector (-1,1), but not for -1
Is this a known feature?

Interpretation of high order interaction terms.
I have difficulties in interpreting high order interaction terms in
high-way ANOVA.
According to Introductory Statistics with R by Peter Dalgaard (Section 12.5),
"The exact definition of the interaction terms and the interpretation of their
associated regression coefficients can be elusive. Some peculiar things
happen if an interaction term is present but one or more of the main
effects are

Change properties of line summary in interaction.plot
Is it possible to change the color/thickness of the summary line in an
interaction.plot without changing the other individual data lines? I would
like to make the line from the summary function (mean) the color red and
thicker than the surrounding black lines. How can I do that?

Creating publication-quality plots for use in Microsoft Word
Hi everyone,
I am trying to make some publication-quality plots for use in Microsoft
Word, but I am having trouble creating high-quality plots that are supported
by Microsoft Word.
If I use the R plot function to create the figure, the lines are jagged, and
the picture is not of high quality (same with JPEG(), TIFF(), and PNG()
functions). I have tried using the Cairo package, but it distorts

Inverse Mills in clustered (multilevel) cross-sectional panel data
Dear R saviors,
kindly address to this problem, I would really appreciate any takers. I am
trying to resolve this issue of IMR in clustered (multilevel)
cross-sectional panel data for more than two months now,.
The characteristics of my dataset are as follows:
- some 900 000 individuals
- total of 60 countries
- cross-sectional time series at the country level max 10 years, not all
