Patching "update.packages" to enable updating of only a user defined subset of packages
Hello dear R developers, I recently found out that it is not possible to limit update.packages() to update only a few packages at a time. The patch offered simply adds a 'subset' parameter and the statement bounded within "if(!missing(subset))" to implement it. The code is pasted bellow (and also attached as an .r file). Might this patch be considered valuable to be added to

Why do we have to turn factors into characters for various functions?
Hello dear R-help mailing list, My question is *not* about how factors are implemented in R (which is, if I understand correctly, that factors keeps numbers and assign levels to them). My question *is* about why so many functions that work on factors don't treat them as characters by default? Here are two simple examples: Example one turning the characters inside a factor into numeric: x

Capturing R console output into a file (sink+savehistory ??)
After reading more, I understand I didn't formulate my last question correctly, so please allow me to rephrase: What I am looking for is a way to save the R console session output. That is, a command that would combine the results of using: ?sink # And ?savehistory My motivation for this is that doing it will allow someone who is a blind user of R to be able to easily export his results to

Sweave and backslashes
Hello Everyone, I am an avid Sweave user and I am trying to pretty print floating point numbers for latex output. For example in my document, I would like: 4.2\cdot 10^-{8} Instead of: 4.2e-08 The Hmisc package has a nice function for doing this- but Hmisc has a ton of dependencies and has proved very unportable to the various machines I work on. So, I set out to write my own function that

Combining several plots besides a dendrogram?
Hello all, I would like to recreate the plot shown here (from a useR 2009 presentation): http://www.agrocampus-ouest.fr/math/useR-2009/abstracts/pdf/Hocking.pdf I downloaded the code for that image, and discovered that it relies on external web services, and also having PERL installed on the computer. Windows 7, update.packages problem: "unable to move temporary installation"?
Hello all, I am using R 2.13.0 with windows 7, after giving my user full privileges to the R folder (as described here<http://www.r-statistics.com/2011/04/how-to-upgrade-r-on-windows-7/> ). This allows me to install new packages just fine. However, when using update.packages(), to update existing packages, I keep getting the following error (for example, when updating the MASS package):

Is there a way to have 'comment' keep a list?
Hello all, I recently discovered the "comment" command. I see it can only hold a vector of characters. Is there a way (or an alternative), to make it possible to have it keep a list? (for example, to keep different pieces of information like date of creation, information of each variable and so on) The closest solution I can think of is using 'names' on the vector, like this:
