Plotting observed vs. fitted values
Dear Wiza[R]ds, I am very grateful to Duncan Murdoch for his assistance with this problem. His help was invaluable. However, the problem has become a little more complicated for me. Now, in each plot, I need to plot the observed and fitted values of a supine and upright posture experiment. Here is what I have and how far I got. # tritiated (3H)-Norepinephrine(NE) disappearance from plasma #

Minimize sshd log clutter/spam from unauthenticated connections
I guess you might find fail2ban useful. It scans logfiles (like /var/log/sshd.log), and when it sees too many authentication failures from an IP address (or network range) it can issue commands to drop any further attempts via a firewall. By having it read its own logfile it's possible to have repeated offenders be cut out for longer and longer time spans.

help on compilation of R help file in LaTeX format.
Dear all, I hope to know how to compile the R help file in LaTeX format under Windows 2000. The TeX/LaTeX system is TeXLive 2002, and the version of R is 1.8.x. Another question, I hope to get the upright Greek letters, just as these in Prof. Faraway's book "Practical Regression and Anova in R", but I don't know which package(s) and/or font(s) should be used in LaTeX. Any

Moving Win2k into the Samba system
Hey all, I just was wondering if there are any issues I should be aware of before moving Win2k and XP into my Samba loop? I have read the docs available but have found nothing Win2k or XP specific. Thanks in advance, chuck Chuck's Top 10 Things to Remember and Think about! ======================================================= 10. Please return stewardess to original upright position. 9.

need settings for the listings package
Hi, I am typesetting R code in TeX using the listings package. I have experimented with various settings for the text, but all look a bit ugly. This might be because I have no typographic experience ;-) I would really appreciate if people sent me the settings they use for the listings package (eg in the \usepackage line, or \lstset, I am thinking about choices for basicstyle, ... etc). Minimize sshd log clutter/spam from unauthenticated connections
Dear OpenSSH developers, a publicly accessible sshd on port 22 generates a lot of log clutter from unauthenticated connections. For an exemplary host on a university network, sshd accumulates 5~20k log lines on a single day (more than 90% of the total amount of syslog lines). That is despite the host having a restricted configuration (no SSH password authentication, firewall rate limit for

IPMASQ and lock-up of all terminals
[mod: This is the second time in a week that someone asks this question: is it a new attack? It sure looks to me like "userland" has completely locked up, but that the kernel is still working. As an isolated case, my diagnosis is: You probably have a bad block in your /bin/login program or something like that. When two people report this in a week, it's starting to become unlikely

Sv: Using locator() to digitise
Hi, Splus allows pasting a graphics object into the plotting window, which makes it possible to do what you describe below. Now I use R which doesn't seem to allow pasting the picture into the graphics window, so I copy the graph onto a transparency sheet, and stick it onto my screen using tape. The coordinates need to be converted to make sense (as you describe). My methodology with the

Summary - Re: R-Graphics
Thanks to all who replied. Mostly the suggestion was to add the argument horizontal= FALSE to the postscript function. However, I was trying to generate a landscape graph. The "fault" lies with gs as Peter Dalgaard pointed out. Under Windows 95, gsview has an option to view landscape or portrait and therefore this problem does not arise on that platform.

Anyone use the Linksys phones?
Is anyone out there using any of the newer linksys phones since Cisco took over? I am more specifically looking at the spa-941 & 942's. Just curious about call quality, programability, and functionality with asterisk. I have read through the literature, but would like some real world feedback. Thanks

HP Deskjet 1000c
Howdy all - I have Samba 2.0.3 running like a champ on a dual PPro 200, 128 MB RAM, running Slackware 3.6, kernel 2.2.5. Running like a champ as far as file sharing is concerned, that is. I have an HP Deskjet 1000c hanging off the parallel port. I set up a raw printer in /etc/printcap, the line looks like this: dj1000|DeskJet 1000c:sh:lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/dj1000 the printing section

Displaying a variable as an expression into a plot label, but the variable has brackets
I'm attempting to insert variables as expressions into labels for my plots, but I'm running into the issue that characters in my labels aren't allowed in expressions, notably '[' and ']'. An input string of "[^3H]5-CT" needs to be displayed as [3H]5-CT with the 3 as superscript. But brackets aren't particularly liked in expressions. I know I can do

[PATCH 0/6] Btrfs commit fixes, async subvol operations
Hi Chris, This is the extent of my current queue of Btrfs snapshot/subvol/commit stuff. Most of these were posted several months ago. Can be sent upstream during this merge window? Not having this functionality is becoming a bit of a roadblock for our efforts to keep the Ceph data in a consistent state. These patches are also available from

smbpasswd fails on Samba 2.0.3, HPUX 10.20
I have been unable to make smbpasswd work on my new Samba version 2.0.3 (HPUX 10.20). The smb.conf was modified from a working version on Linux (version 1.9.18p8). The relevant (I hope) output from smbpasswd, smb.log and testparms follow below. Are the log messages about "Couldn't set effective gid to -24 currently set to (real=0,eff=0)" and "Can't become connected
