Unexpected result with lag() et diff() in plm package.
I have an unexpected result with the functions lag() and diff() in the plm (panel data) package when used with transform(). These plm-specific functions are supposed to generate lags and first differences within each panel. lag() does not work properly the first time (it reproduces the same series--this is a common time series pitfall), BUT then it does work properly when it is run a second

1.8.1 Make problem on SunOS
I am trying to make R-1.8.1 on (SunOS shell1 5.8 Generic_108528-15 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraAX-i2). I did ./configure make Configure output seems ok. The make proceeds until the following line appears, repeated indefinitely (until I break): ./config.status: ./confstat28489-19881/subs.frag: cannot overwrite existing file I suspect that this may involve write permissions (and maybe the umask set in

Some matrix and sandwich questions
Dear R-help, I have a four-part question about regression, matrices, and sandwich package. 1) In the sandwich package, I would like to better understand the meat() function. >From the bread() documentation, for a simple OLS regression, bread() returns (1/n * X'X)^(-1) That is, for a simple regression (per the documentation on bread()): MyLM <- lm(y ~ x) bread(MyLM)

Enormous Datasets
Dear List, I have some projects where I use enormous datasets. For instance, the 5% PUMS microdata from the Census Bureau. After deleting cases I may have a dataset with 7 million+ rows and 50+ columns. Will R handle a datafile of this size? If so, how? dup error of rsync 3.0.6-1 under cygwin 1.7.0-62 and 63
I have used earlier rsync on cygwin successfully for a long. I have now moved to cygwin 1.7.0, which required moving to rsync 3.0.6-1 at the same time. (The -1 is for minor cygwin-specific patches.) When I do almost any command with rsync, such as the one below, it breaks at a dup2 after a fork in pipe.c (routine piped_child). Windows gives error code 6, which is translated by cygwin to errno 9 =

Analysis of Dispersion
Does anyone know of an R implementation of Rao's (1965) described 'Analysis of Dispersion' which is the generalization of the General Linear Model, Y = XB, to multiple Y variables and the further use of the method to 'Test of Additional Information' in one set of Y variables corrected for a second set of Y variables, i.e. the generalization of covariance analysis. I have

rsync hang on large file in a set
This is to both the rsync and cygwin lists, and I regret that it is vaguer than I would like, but ... With cygwin 1.7 (latest beta) and the rsync released with it (3.0.6-1) I try to sync a couple of Gb of Thunderbird mail files. The flag settings were -avzuP plus a --chmod and some includes/excludes to control which files to move. I would repeatably get "hangs" on particular files,

help building dataset
I'm having trouble building a dataset. I'm working with Census data from Brazil, and the particular set I'm trying to get into right now is a microdata sample which has 4 data files that are saved at .txt files full of numbers. The folder also has lot of excel sheets and other text files describing the data, and (I'm assuming) to help organize everything. Unfortunately there

variable name question
Hi All, This is surely an easy question but somehow I am not being able to get it. I am using R 2.13.2 and have a data set where variable names like this appear: pci1990, pci1991, ... , pci2009. "pci1990" has data on per capita income for 1990, "pci1991" has data on per capita income for 1991, and so on. I would like to create the logarithm of per capita for each of the

Problem with 16-in-1 card reader
My new PC has an internal 16-in-1 card reader connected via USB 2.0. The device is the Techsolo TCR-1640 (http://www.techsolo.de/product/cardreader/tcr_1640/index.php). I boot from a compact flash inserted in it and I can mount and unmount the same CF once the system has booted and has mounted the root partition from my graid3 array. The problem arise when I replace the inserted CF with another

Advanced bootstrap question
I have an advanced question about bootstrapping. There are two datasets. In each bootstrap iteration, I would like to sample One observation per cluster from the first dataset. N observations with replacement from the second dataset. Right now I am using dplyr::sample_n() for first dataset, with this sampling embedded in the program that boot() from the boot package is running to sample the

help ith burncd (Input/output error, 6.1-RC, plextor PX-740a)
I have a new system which includes a Plextor PX-740a DVD+-R/RW CD-R/RW drive attached to an Asus A8V-MX motherboard. When I try to use burncd to burn a cd, it writes all of the data, says "fixating CD, please wait.." and then reports burncd: ioctl(CDRIOCFIXATE): Input/output error Oddly enough, the CD seems to be usable. I can successfully burn the same file if I use cdrecord. The

RWinEdt install problem
I cannot get the "R" button to appear in RWinEdt. I'm running R 2.0.1 under Windows XP. I did a clean install of the latest WinEdt. Previously (for an earlier installation of WinEdt) I had RWinEdt running OK. Now, even though I have the distributed RWinEdt_1.6-2.zip extracted to the right place in the R directory, and when I execute library(RWinEdt) in the R Console,

I have an Asus A8V-MX motherboard with an AMD Athlong 64 X2 3800+ CPU and I'm trying to run powerd to keep it cooler/quieter/greener. I'm running -STABLE (6.1-RC) cvsup'ed a couple of days ago, with a kernel config that consists of the SMP sample plus an atapicam device. I'm loading the cpufreq.ko module in /boot/loader.conf. I've attached my dmesg output and sysctl -a
