graphs superimposed on pictures?
Hi: I am doing some work that involves plotting points of interest superimposed on photographs and maps. I can produce the plots fine in R, but so far I have had to do the superimposition externally, which makes it tedious to do exploratory work. I have looked to see if there is some capability to put a background picture on a plot window, but I have not found anything. Advice, anyone? Cheers

display SVG, PNG, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, PPM in new plot frame
Dear R-help I want to display an image file in a new plot frame. SVG is my preferred format, but I can also consider PNG, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, and PPM (from ImageMagick). By way of background (although not material to this posting), the image file is generated by a call to 'dot' (part of the 'Graphviz' suite) after the required .dot file has been produced using hand-crafted R code.

Problem/anomalous behavior with image() function (and ReadImages?)
When an RGB photo is displayed using R's image() function with the help of the pixmap (or rimage) package it is common to see an anomalous white line running across the picture (either horizontally or vertically). The line can be removed by simply stretching the image frame a little in the direction perpendicular to the anomalous line, or by maximizing the image frame (tested under Fedora 10;

rimage package broken with fedora upgrade
Dear R list members I would be grateful if anyone could guide me to a solution for fixing my rimage package problem described below. I recently upgraded my machine from fedora core 3 to fedora core 6 and then upgraded R from version 2.3.1 from version 2.4.1. I then fired up R, tried to load the rimage library and received the following messages: > library(rimage) Error in dyn.load(x,

Interpretation of EXACT Statistical Test in finding the probability as Std. Deviations (SumP)
Okay, so I'm fairly retarded, and asked a question about finding the T-Value in the Fisher Exact method. I suppose what I'm truly after can best be explained by the Biddle Consulting site that has a program setup to deal with this kind of thing. Unfortunately, it is not currently functioning, and has not been for some time. As a result, I'm trying to figure out how to do this on my

converting a vector of bytes to a PNG/JPEG image
Hi, I have some code that uses rJava. One of the Java side methods returns a byte[] representing the bytes from a PNG image. What I'd like to do is to be able to bring up the PNG on the R side (I can bring up a Swing window to show the PNG but I want to avoid that). I have looked at the pixmap and rimage packages but don't seem to be able to work out how I'd go about this (or if

rimage doesn't install on Mac OS X 10.4
Hi, I'm trying to install rimage on a Mac OS X 10.4 machine. I followed the advice in previous R-help threads and got over the hurdles of having the header files in the right places, among other things. But I can't figure out what to do with this error. ice.pnl.gov:/home/waichler<949>system_profiler -detailLevel mini SPSoftwareDataType Software: System Software Overview:

Is there a package for digitizing or reading jpegs, ets. in R?
I'm interested in digitizing some scanned time series, and looking for a solution that is easy and flexible. I thought I might be able to use R's locator() if I could get the image into a device. I noticed that there are some packages like (rimage), but it (a) doesn't seem to be available for the Windows version and forces me to upgrade a bunch of libraries for my linux system. It

write in rimage package
Is there any way to write an imagematrix generated by the rimage package? Reproducible example: library(rimage) x <- read.jpeg(system.file("data", "cat.jpg", package="rimage")) png("newcat.png") plot(x) dev.off() The newcat.png image is different from the original file, because there are ugly white borders around it. read.*: How to read from a URL?
The question is how to use a URL in place of a file= argument for read.*.functions that do not support this internally. e.g., utils::read.table() and her family all support a file= argument that can take a URL equally well as a local file. So, if I have a file on the web, I can equally well do > langren <- read.csv("langrens.csv", header=TRUE) > langren <-

R Style Guides?
Hi: I am looking for "style guides" for larger R programs, and would like suggestions of web pages or documents to look at. I am particularly interested in guidelines for how to structure programs, and such issues as managing scope, passing data around, data hiding, and so forth. I do have some understanding of how scope works, and how object-oriented programming does or might work.

rimage installation problem-ubuntu 8.10

Reading JPEG file, converting to HEX
Colleagues, I am using R to assemble RTF documents (which are plain text). I need to embed a JPEG graphic that was created with R. I presume that the steps need to be: a. read the file into R b. convert the object to HEX format c. write the converted object to a textfile. If I read the file into R using readLines, I get the following (only the first 5 lines shown): > >
