corrupted index preventing save
Hi, I''m using Rails/AAF with Ferret 0.10.11, and my index occasionally
(every few weeks, roughly) becomes corrupted.
If the index is busted, until I rebuild it our users are unable to save
anything. I get errors like the one below, and the save rolls back.
My question is, is there any way to catch the error, and continue with
the save even if the model isn''t indexed? What

disabling automatic indexing in acts_as_ferret
I''d like to be able to enable/disable the automatic indexing of
documents acts_as_ferret does. Something like MyModel.disable_indexing
MyModel.enable_indexing would be perfect. I need this because I do some
indexing that requires visiting the parents of the model objects and my
import method imports the children first, so the information isn''t there
yet. I''d like to

ANN: acts_as_ferret
Hi all
This week I have worked with Rails and Ferret to test Ferrets (and Lucenes)
capabilities. I decided to make a mixin for ActiveRecord as it seemed the
simplest possible solution and I ended up making this into a plugin.
For more info on Ferret see:
http://ferret.davebalmain.com/trac/
The plugin is functional but could easily be refined. Anyway I want to share it
with you. Regard it as a

Erratic behavior with ferret 0.95 and acts_as_ferret
I am getting this issue also... Does anyone know what this is? When will
Acts as Ferret be available for v10?
Thanks for your help in desperation!

Using acts_as_ferret outside rails
How do I use a model that has "acts_as_ferret" defined outside rails?
I''ve tried adding this to the top of my model:
require
"#{RAILS_ROOT}/vendor/plugins/acts_as_ferret/lib/acts_as_ferret.rb"
and then defining RAILS_ROOT and RAILS_ENV in my app that uses the model
outside rails. That got me this exception:

duplicate search results
i''m using Ferret 0.9.0 with acts_as_ferret (the one from svn.jkraemer.net), and
i''m getting duplicate results, as described in this thread:
http://rubyforge.org/pipermail/ferret-talk/2005-December/000048.html
is there a way to configure the indexes created by acts_as_ferret to use :key =>
:id, as described in that thread? i''ve poked around in the code, and had

nuby: do models have to inherit directly from ActiveRecord?
Hello,
I have a few models -- book, cd, dvd -- for which I''d like to have an
abstract base superclass to hold some common stuff. That abstract class, I
was thinking, would inherit from ActiveRecord.
Didn''t work, though, and looking around, I found this:

[0.10.0 - acts_as_ferret] Problem while saving new items
Disclaimer: ferret newbie here, don''t blame too hard.
Hi, I''m trying to apply acts_as_ferret to apply search to my Person
model:
class Person < ActiveRecord::Base
validates_presence_of :name, :surname
acts_as_ferret :fields => [ ''name'', ''surname'' ]
...
But when I try to save a new Person instance I get this error:

We''ve been running into problems with ferret indexing lately. The
problem is intermittent and some times it persists. Just got this after
wiping the index and redeploying:

where''d we come from?
I''m curious -- how many of us came to Rails from other branches of the OO
world -- Java, C# -- and how many of us came from the design or non-OO
scripting worlds?
Reason I ask is that I''m finding Rails a blast and very productive, but I
think one reason is that I already cut my teeth on MVC and ORM during two
years of writing apps with J2EE/Struts/Hibernate. And in Javaland, it

Error on manual indexing
I''m having some problems with getting the drb server to work correctly
on my production server. As a workaround I tried disabling automatic
indexing and have a cron job manually update the index every hour or so.
I disabled the automatic indexing with:

end
But whenever I try Page.rebuild_index
I get a ''wrong number of arguments''

Update/Create record only if field is true
I have a sellable flag in my database. I''m trying to have ferret only
add/update records where sellable == true. What is the best way to do
this? I''ve tried editing instance_methods.rb in the AAF, but I still
can''t get it to work.
Thanks for the help

Credit Card Processing / Merchant Account
Hi All,
Has anyone implemented a credit card processing / merchant account
system using Rails? I know that there is a ''payment'' gem that is
supposed to integrate with the Authorize.net gateway, but I''m wondering
if that is the best (and only) solution out there. Are there any other
recommended solutions from Rails programmers out there?
Thanks in advance for the

create an object from a string?
I''m trying to dynamically create an instance of an object at runtime, from a
String. I have a method that returns one of a number of Strings ("Car",
"Motorcycle", "Bicycle"), and when I receive the String, I then want to
instantiate one of those objects.
Seems like there should be a way to do it in Ruby, but maybe I''ve been up

Noob Question concerning code in Agile Web Development with Rails
Hi,
I''m currently learning Ruby on Rails using "Agile Web Development with
Rails." I am using RadRails as my development environment. Everything has
been going along well, until the end of chapter 7. Just before the end of
the chapter, we set up our store pages so that they can be styled with the
depot.css stylesheet. This is where I run into my problem. The stylesheet

indexing multiple languages with acts_as_ferret
I have an applicaiton where I''m indexing content in a number of
languages, all encoded in UTF8. I would think that having my locale
set to en_US.utf8 would be sufficient to make this work in
ferret/acts_as_ferret, but I keep running into problems, even with
english text.
What have others done to cope with these encoding difficulties?

acts_as_ferret transactions
acts_as_ferret does not handle transaction aborts properly. If a model
is modified but something latter causes the transaction it was wrapped
in to abort, the ferret index will not revert to the original record
data. I have included a klunky patch to defer modifying the ferret
index until after the current transaction commits. It would seem
prudent to resolve this issue, though I
