dev.print and postscript device problem
Hello to the list,
I noticed something that it seems weird to me with postscript device in
dev.print function.
Suppose this little code:
x<-1:10
par(family="sans")
plot(x, main="main")
Using dev.print with pdf device brings no problem
dev.print(device=pdf, file="test.pdf")
But using postscript device
dev.print(device=postscript, file="test.ps")
I get

Mix font families in a single label?
Dear R-help community:
I have been searching for an elegant solution to the question posed in
my subject. I would like to be able to use any of the R functions like
text() or mtext() to display some text with mixed font families. For
example, a label like "huge-class background load", where the word
"huge" is in Courier and the rest is in the default family (or any other

setting font in plots
Dear Reader
I am trying to change the font in a plot and after several trials finally
came up with the following code.
plot(var_a, var_b, pch = 16, font.lab = 10, font = 10)
points(var_a, var_c, pch = 3, font = 10)
legend(0.1, 0.8, legend = c(?var_b?, ?var_c?), pch = c(16,3))
It does change the font in the plot (Courier), but not in the legend that
does not accept the "font = ..."

xyplot: legend title + legend on 1 line
Does anybody know how in xyplot to put the legend title on one line with the
legend? I can get the legend on one line with columns=... but the title is
always on top. I tried a custom key with key=... and text=... but I can't
put the title text in front of the plotting symbol.
I am looking for the following layout of the legend, on one line:
"Legend Title:" + plot symbol1 + legend

change legend character size in image.plot
I'm using the image.plot() function (fields package), but I want to enlarge
the characters of the legend (as they are too small to be read in a combined
figure), but there is no way I can find a command to do this. I can enlarge
the legend bar (with legend.witdh), axis character size (cex.axis) or the
total legend size (legend.shrink), but not the character size of the legend
characters

Align legend title
Dear R developers,
I needed to align the title of legend for some of my plots. If there is interest to include
this into base R, bellow are the examples and the relevent diffs.
Regards, Gregor
x <- 1:10
y1 <- 1.5 * x
y2 <- 2.0 * x
y <- cbind(y1, y2)
source(file=url("http://gregor.gorjanc.googlepages.com/legend.R"))
matplot(x, y, type="l", lty=c(1, 2))

legend: interplay between title and y.intersp
What about
plot(c(0,1), c(0,1), type="n")
legend("top", legend=c("", "a", ""), col=c("blue", "red", "green"),
title="test", y.intersp=c(1,-0.4), lwd=1)
(in recent versions of R)

Uwe

xyplot Legend Title and Position
Dear R Community,
I'm using xyplot in Lattice with a legend and a title on the legend.
The title on legend is being cut off, as can be seen by running the
code below. The legend is on the right, but I would like to get to
the top right of the graphics window. Is there a way to get the
legend title to display correctly and move the whole legend up the the
top right?
Thanks,
Justin

How to specify fonts
In Splus, if I wanted to use Bookman-Demi instead of the default
Helvetica, I would specify font = 18 as a graphical parameter for a
postscript printer.
In R it seems font can take only the values 1 to 4 which change only
the style but it's still Helvetica. There's some great flexibility
using Hershey vector fonts, but it appears they are all mono-spaced.
I wish to use proportional

R-1.8.1-4: Font family, ticks and mathematical expression??
Hi all,
Could anyone help answer the following questions, please?
(I'm using R-1.8.1-4 on Fedora Core 1 and very new to R)
(i) Is it possible to specify a font family (e.g. courier or helvetica)
when graphing?
(ii) How can I make ticks point inwards on all four sides of a plot? Is
it possible to have minor and major ticks?
(iii) How would I specify a symbol "\sim" (i.e.

legend: interplay between title and y.intersp
Set the legend position explicitly with x and y values and add xpd = TRUE
to the legend call to clip the plot to the figure region and not the plot
region (the default). Something like this (you may have to fool around with
y.intersp, etc. to allow enough space between the legend lines):
plot(c(0,1), c(0,1), type="n")
legend(x = .4, y = 1.25, legend=c("", "",

Legend text -- discrepancy between X11 and postscript
Hi,
When I place a legend on a plot it looks exactly as I intended
on the screen. However, almost always, when I export this to
postscript file, the legend's text protrudes through the legend's
frame (the latter being placed correctly).
See the appended example code. I can send the EPS file as well
for those that are interested (<4 kb; <200 lines).
I found nothing in the FAQS,

distance between legend title and legend box
Hi,
I've looked at the parameters available for the legend function and
cannot find a way to change the distance between the top of the box
surrounding a legend and the legend's title. I have a math expression
that raises the height of my title.
If you don't mind the non-sensical title I give to the legend for
this plot (Figure 3.20 in R Graphics):
