I am running Shorewall + Squid + Dansguardian. Everything I do on my desktop goes through it. We have a XP laptop which works fine. However, when I connect a new laptop running Vista (Ultimate) I have problems. It takes 5-10 minutes to get to Google, using either Firefox or IE. If I shut down Shorewall or remove the REDIRECT to 3128 for the transparent proxy, the Vista notebook runs at normal speed. I don''t know if this is to do with Shorewall or Squid or the DHCP server. Frankly, I have very little clue as to what I''m doing here! The Vista laptop is 192.168.0.197 and called "Vanish" The gateway machine is 192.168.0.3 and is called "spareparts" and runs Shorewall + Squid + Dansguardian + dhcp3 My desktop is 192.168.0.196 and is called "Downstairs" For this sesssion I just started Firefox which has moogle.com.au as a homepage. Any ideas gratefully accepted. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. Have you disabled IPv6 on the Vista box? Geza> I am running Shorewall + Squid + Dansguardian. Everything I do on my > desktop goes through it. I should have thought of that! I''ve just set the registry setting to 0x20 ("Prefer ip4 to ip6") and rebooted it but it doesn''t seem to have helped. Thanks anyway. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. You can correct the problem in other more permanent ways: Either: a) Reconfigure Squid to not use Ident user ids. The reason for the slow response is that Squid is sending Ident requests (TCP port 113) to the client system. The client system is dropping these requests and the default Squid Ident timeout is 10 seconds. b) Open TCP Port 113 in the Vista firewall. -Tom -- Tom Eastep \ Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool Shoreline, \ http://shorewall.net Washington USA \ teastep@shorewall.net PGP Public Key \ https://lists.shorewall.net/teastep.pgp.key ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft Defy all challenges. I think you shall try to remove it altogether, not so confident if Vista honors that setting or just claims to do that.> I should have thought of that! > I''ve just set the registry setting to 0x20 ("Prefer ip4 to ip6") and rebooted it but it doesn''t seem to have helped. > Thanks anyway. > > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > This SF.net email is sponsored by: Microsoft > Defy all challenges.
