I''m pleased to announce the availability of Shorewall 4.0.0.
Shorewall version 4.0 represents a substantial shift in direction for
Shorewall. Up to now
- Shorewall has been written entirely in Bourne Shell.
- Shorewall has run the iptables utility to add each Netfilter rule.
Shorewall version 4 offers you a choice. You can continue to use the
existing shell-based implementation or you can use a new implementation
of the Shorewall compiler written in the Perl programming language. The
new compiler:
- has a small disk footprint
- is very fast.
- generates a firewall script that uses iptables-restore; so the
script is very fast.
- generates better and more consistent error messages.
- does a much more thorough job of checking the configuration to
avoid run-time errors.
Both compilers may be installed on your system and you can use whichever
one suits you in a particular case.
If you want to continue using the Shell-based compiler, the upgrade
considerations are minimal. See the release notes
(http://www.shorewall.net/pub/shorewall/4.0/shorewall-4.0.0/releasenotes.txt).
I want to personally thank Steven Jan Springl for his tireless efforts
in testing the new (and old) compiler(s). Both compilers are much better
as a result of his efforts and we all owe him a deep debt of gratitude;
Shorewall 4.0 would not have been possible without him.
Please note that Shorewall 4.0 will *not* be available from Sourceforge.
You must use another site to download the release.

I had just one aim, guarantee Shorewall 4.0 would be released by the end of the year, with the hope it would make it into Debian Lenny. I would encourage people to try the new Perl compiler, especially those who have complained of performance issues with shorewall start/restart. I think they will be amazed.
