Shorewall users - Jun 2005 - tcrules file and limit

According to the documentation there is a limit to marking of 255. Why
is this? Can I work around it?

Shorewall reserves marks > 255  for it''s internal use.

Let me re-phase my question. In the tcrules file can I have more than
255 rules? I want to mark like 300 diffrent IP''s in the tcrules file.
Is
there a better way to do that?
