Everyone, I just did a search of this mailing list, and found no discussion of migrating the FAQs to a Wiki. I think moving the FAQs to a Wiki will lower the bar to community maintenance of this content. Hello, I have a wiki setup, I am happy to host one, I would like to give it a shot. http://wiki.rettc.com Let''s give the wiki a try. If I see anyone attempt to populate this wiki with shorewall FAQ info, I will put time into this. Or maybe a few people can volunteer to help populate this wiki. I can''t see a reason that this is a bad idea other than the fact of syncing with the real one, but I am sure this could be done programatically at some point. Comments? Bad idea? Good idea? Bad idea? Good idea?Good idea in my opinion. There were a couple of other choices for Wiki you could have used. Based on a wiki core, we could then have xml, html, docbook, blah blah formats. We will see how this goes, and build as needed. About the other wikis you mentioned, I haven''t looked into them. My main criteria was having a php core, and phpwiki seemed reasonable. I could run a different one though. I just had it set up a while ago. > > PhpWiki (the one you installed) > http://phpwiki.sourceforge.net/PHP Core. I originaly tried a later version which was quite buggy and downgraded. It seems that fresh development has been done on this project. When I originally installed it, I found that development was pretty dead, ie there had been no cvs changes for a looong time. Maybe new spice has entered this project.> > MediaWiki (used by wikipedia.org) > http://wikipedia.sourceforge.net/www.wikipedia.org is cool. This has fresh development going on. PHP core with mysql database.> > MoinMoin (used by docbook.org) > http://moin.sourceforge.net/ >Python based wiki. I am not too familiar with python. This was why I was leaning toward PHP. Over the holidays, hopefully we can get enough comments and brainstorming and formatting / organization ideas down so that we are ready to layout a final setup. I am liking what I see about MediaWiki, I will get one of these going over the holidays. Alex Martin http://www.rettc.com
I''ve been using Tikiwiki. It has wiki, a PHP core, and lots of other optional features: blog, forums, image gallery, etc. See: www.voip-info.org for an example of using it for a simple community wiki. The part of this wiki most like the proposed Shorewall wiki would be for an open source PBX application called Asterisk: http://www.voip-info.org/tiki-index.php?page=Asterisk See www.tikiwiki.org for more info on Tiki itself. Ok. I am now confused. I got excited because I have wanted to see how a wiki goes, and because I had set one up in the past, and because I try to give what I can to support shorewall. But, remind me why we would want to make a wiki faq? Also, Tom (are you out there?), does your faq live in any version aside from html? Like docbook or something that can be exported easily? Does it live in cvs? Wait, I poked around the source from the website and I think the answer is no. I think that there may be better ways to distribute shorewall support tasks to people aside from Tom. Tom pointed out that his documentation depends on his FAQ. Like all of the various links are dependant on his http://www.shorewall.net/FAQ.htm. And in terms of documentation, Tom is doing an extremely excellent job. Probably the best documentation for an open source project I have seen. I think the main way to offload Tom is to moderate the mailing lists, and maybe discuss documentation additions/clarifications somewhere, maybe shorewall-devel if this is a reasonable place. Tom''s documentation system has worked fine and will work fine. The main trouble that spawned all of this list noise seems to be based on unfamiliarity/cognition/laziness as demonstrated in list mails. Again, if we shorewall supporters simply moderate and direct list postings, so that Tom need not be dissappointed when people do not understand/search/read through his excellent documentation, I think that we can once again achieve the low rumble of silence and harmony on the lists, and hopefully in Tom''s mind. Maybe I am way off here...?.... Alex Martin http://www.rettc.com

I also understand that a product without documentation is worthless and given that I started my career 34 years ago writing documentation, I think I know how to write decent documentation. That in no way means that I want to continue doing it... As you suggest, I also resent spending time writing documentation that posters on the lists ignore... -Tom -- Tom Eastep \ Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool Shoreline, \ http://shorewall.net Washington USA \ teastep@shorewall.net

I used XXE for the conversion, and html generated output.
