[Shorewall-users] PPP <--> RH9 <--> LinkSys <--> Home Network
This might be a little crazy, but thought I''d ask here anyway ... I currently have a home machine -- running Shorewall, of course -- connected to my campus modem pool using PPP. Until I can get real broadband access, I am wondering if I could add a LinkSys box (WRT54G) and use PPP. I guess the goal would be something like this: +-------+ +---------+ | | | +<=======> \ PPP | | 10BaseT | +<=======> | 10BaseT <========>+ RH9 +<========>+ WRT54G +<=======> | Home Network | | | +<=======> / | | | | +-------+ +---------+ So, I guess there are two questions: o Is the above even possible with the WRT54G? o How to setup ''shorewall'' to allow this? What I *think* I need to do is make the RH9 box appear as if it were an ISP ... if I could fake that, it just might work! I told you it was crazy! ;-) Thanks for any ideas! -- Prof Kenneth H Jacker khj@cs.appstate.edu Computer Science Dept www.cs.appstate.edu/~khj Appalachian State Univ Boone, NC 28608 USA

Will only talk to a client." in a comparison table at: http://www.seattlewireless.net/index.cgi/AccessPointsRouters_2f802_2e11g Of course, a switch != bridge ... not really sure how to understand the comment about "Will only talk to a client" ... Has anyone used the WRT54G only as a switch/WAP? I''d be very happy if that''ll work ... Thanks for your comments! -Kenneth

[Shorewall-users] Re: PPP <--> RH9 <--> LinkSys <--> Home Network
I actually have exactly that setup.... Cable Modem <----> Shorewall Box <----> WRT54G (WAP & switch only, WAN port not used) My Shorewall box is plugged into a switch port on the WRT54G... Works like a charm! -----Original Message----- From: shorewall-users-bounces@lists.shorewall.net [mailto:shorewall-users-bounces@lists.shorewall.net] On Behalf Of Kenneth Jacker Sent: Monday, December 01, 2003 5:39 PM To: Shorewall Users Mailing List Subject: [Shorewall-users] Re: PPP <--> RH9 <--> LinkSys <--> Home Network te> I think you will find it easier to just ignore the WAN interface te> on the WRT54G and use one of it''s LAN ports to connect to the te> RH9 box.
