[Shorewall-users] Medium/large sites using Shorewall?
I''ve been using Shorewall here at home quite successfully, and I''m wondering about implementing it at my work location. At work, we have around 500 users with about 10 (perhaps as many as 15) active PPTP connections. I assume there are people out there running sites this size -- right? I believe we average about 2-3 Mbit/sec on our Internet link (I don''t know how much of this is PPTP traffic, obviously some, but likely not a WHOLE lot). I assume any "modern" server could handle this sort of load? At any rate, if you run a site this size (or larger), I''d like to hear from you.... Thanks, Matt Goheen
I have installed shorewall in a few web farm environments. One site was taking around 80,000 hits a day and the server (a desktop 400MHz dell) was fine. Make sure you have a reasonable amount of memory. The only trouble you might have is convincing others that the solution is secure, particularly when no one is accountable. Most management seem happier spending lots on a proprietary firewall (which can still be poorly configured) than using a free software solution. Clearly they should be more open minded but I have lost a few battles over these issues.
