It has a micro-ATX board of uncertain parentage with a 1.4Ghz Celeron, the Intel 82815 chipset and 512MB of PC133 RAM. The Intel 82815 has an integrated "Chipset Graphics Controller" (82815 CGC). There is no on-board video RAM and the kernel must supply video ram for the graphics controller from the system RAM via a "AGP Aperature" (a window into the system RAM for use by the graphics controller; the size of the aperature is configured in the BIOS).>From the boot messages under Fedora Core 2 (kernel 2.6.8-1.521):Linux agpgart interface v0.100 (c) Dave Jones agpgart: Detected an Intel i815 Chipset. agpgart: Maximum main memory to use for agp memory: 439M agpgart: AGP aperture is 64M @ 0x44000000 When I started this project, I flipped a coin as to which distribution to use. The system currently runs Fedora Core 2 but the rest of my Linux boxes run SuSE 9.2. SuSE won the coin flip so I started there: - The SuSE 9.2 installer just won''t run (blank screen with a bit of noise about a third of the way down the screen). Since there doesn''t appear to be a non-graphical installer, I quickly abandoned trying to install SuSE. Note that the SuSE installer does have the ability to manually select drivers but I didn''t try that. - The Fedora Graphical Installer was able to run (sort of) -- Many screens were mis-drawn and I had a couple of complete lock-ups. I finally was able to complete the installation but X was unusable. Since this system hosts the Shorewall mailing lists, the "Search" facility for the Shorewall web-site and mailing list archives, and is the download site for the sample configurations, I didn''t feel like I could leave it torn up on the work bench over the weekend while troubleshooting this problem. So I re-installed the original hard drive and spent an enjoyable afternoon watching football on television. Over the holidays, I''ll build up a backup server to run the mailing list etc. temporarily (I''ve got an old DeskPro sitting here gathering dust). That way, I can take this system off-line and get it working without any time pressure. -Tom -- Tom Eastep \ Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool Shoreline, \ http://shorewall.net Washington USA \ teastep@shorewall.net PGP Public Key \ https://lists.shorewall.net/teastep.pgp.key

I get a white stripe at the top of the screen. To get around this I hit F2 on the grub menu and selected text mode. I haven''t completed the install as I am already run 9.2 on this PC (I don''t normally use the on board graphics card). Steven.

I remember having to do the following during install or if using grub just specify the amount of ram manually minus the amount used by the intergrated video card. Example RAM (256) Video(64) Total Avail Ram (192) im might be off extacly how this is used in grub but i believe if you append the MEM=192 that should allow video card to use the 64 megs required without the system having mapped all the ram causing conflicts when ram is accessed.

Thanks. I''m getting the old DeskPro out of mothballs right now anyway -- I think that I want to do a "practice" installation first since there is a lot of software to move to a new distribution. -Tom -- Tom Eastep \ Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool Shoreline, \ http://shorewall.net Washington USA \ teastep@shorewall.net PGP Public Key \ https://lists.shorewall.net/teastep.pgp.key

The SuSE installer apparently tries to use the Vesa X driver; I didn''t notice which driver Fedora selected but the current Fedora X config (which works fine) uses the i810 driver. I believe that driver was originally provided by Intel and is now maintained by the X org. - -Tom - -- Tom Eastep \ Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool Shoreline, \ http://shorewall.net Washington USA \ teastep@shorewall.net PGP Public Key \ https://lists.shorewall.net/teastep.pgp.key -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.5 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Thunderbird - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iD8DBQFBl8lnO/MAbZfjDLIRAgNtAJ9vU1454bazMhgO18USqOxH9fteTACcDITu tjV2FiGIaaS8HaHFgOO0KWQ=bYC8 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

Try squeezing 128-256M into it, usually you can use up to about half the actual amount of physical RAM in your system, never had any problems with Compaqs along with Slackware v. 7.1 - 10.0 + current, 486-PII''s. -- Patrick Benson Stockholm, Sweden

The only box I have with a chipset close to yours is a Dell GX110 with an Intel i810 chipset but I have OpenBSD running on it + an old integrated ATI video on board. X works fine on it, if I have a go with a 2.6.x later on, I''ll tell ya how it went....just don''t hold your breath! ;-) Best of luck! -- Patrick Benson Stockholm, Sweden
