[patch] output of rsync -n truncated
...ticed that the output of "rsync -n" is sometimes truncated. Even when you repeat the same command, the output may be different. I'm using rsync-2.5.5 on a Debian woody system with ext3 file systems. One scenario to reproduce this behavior is someting like this: # rsync -aR /usr/share/zoneinfo /tmp # rsync -n -avRH localhost:/usr/share/zoneinfo /tmp receiving file list ... done usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Dhaka => usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Dacca usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Thimphu => usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Thimbu usr/share/zoneinfo/PRC => usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Shanghai usr/share/zonei...

Upcoming change in Daylight Savings Time
...eople may have about the change affecting when Daylight Savings Time begins and ends for various time zones which takes effect this year. NOTE: Before you decide this message does not effect you please bear in mind that the most critical file involved in all of this is /etc/localtime. That is the zoneinfo file your system will be using to convert the native system time to the format appropriate for your local time zone. Typically that file gets installed at the point you initially install your system and then never changed unless you change it manually (typically using tzsetup(8)). So if you have...

Timeserver sending wrong time to Windows Clients
...Linux box via: net time \\Nemesis /set /yes. I would like to have xntp keep the clock on the server updated. Problem: ntpdate and xntp work great at setting the Linux box hardware clock to GMT. The problem I am having is that my windows clients do not get the right time no matter what I set the zoneinfo or timezone or Linux system clock to. It almost appears that my zoneinfo of [America/Chicago] adds 6 hours to GMT instead or subtracting 6 hours to get the correct local time. If the hwclock is set to GMT and zoneinfo is set to [no selection], the windows boxes get GMT. (i.e. correct time + 6 hour...

...vised that this list is the right one to address the issue; in the meantime I investigated the matter somewhat more closely, including searching recent R-devel postings, since I haven't been following this list.) Last May there were two reports here of problems with Sys.timezone, one where the zoneinfo directory is in a nonstandard location (https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-devel/2017-May/074267.html) and the other where the system lacks the file /etc/localtime (https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-devel/2017-May/074275.html). My system exhibits a third case: it lacks /etc/timezone and does not set...

Variable assignment in imported file
Hi there, Maybe another bug? I have the following in site.pp: $localtime = $domain ? { "example.org" => "/usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Madrid", default => "/usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Madrid" } If I take this away and put it in another file, and then import that file, I get the following error: err: Cannot reassign variable localtime in file /etc/puppet/manifests/def/vars.pp at line 5 Of course I...

outdated timezone info
Just upgraded 4.7 to 4.8 stable. Hoped that timezone info will be up to date, but it still isn't though files in /usr/share/zoneinfo show new dates. For instance daylight saving time settings are outdated in Europe/Vilnius file. I'll try to recompile those files from sources got fom ftp://elsie.nci.nih.gov/pub/ but it would be nice to have updated info for the next release of freebsd or even next update to 4.8stable .. The...

how to calculate time offset between timezones?
#QUESTION# Is there a way to calculate the offset between timezones, e.g. from "AST" to "GMT"? #DETAILS# I am working with data files that use local time, and that indicate the timezone by e.g. "AST" (Atlantic Standard Time, my local time) in a header. New Standard/Daylight time-change dates in rhel4u2 butnot centos4.2?

I don't know where that > /etc/localtime came from -- it's not the same > as any of the files in the /usr/share/zoneinfo > hierarchy. But putting US/Eastern in there did > the trick. My guess is you had old version of tzdata package, that was updated to current version sometime in the past. Now, if you look which package owns /etc/localtime and /usr/share/zoneinfo stuff, you get: # rpm -qf /etc/localtime gl...

what updates /etc/localtime?
I see in CentOS 7 that /etc/localtime is a symlink (which seems sensible...) but in earlier versions it is a copy of some file from under /usr/share/zoneinfo. rpm -q --scripts tzdata does not show any postinstall script, so in the non-symlink versions, how does the copied /etc/localtime file get updated with new zone data? -- Les Mikesell lesmikesell at gmail.com

yum and yumex change system time
...so my questions are: - what is your TZ? - what does "[/bin/]date" show? - what does your hardware clock: "/sbin/hwclock --show" report? [need to be root to use that command] - is your /etc/localtime file a standalone file or a symlink to /usr/share/zoneinfo/... ? - if a symlink, to what file? - what is the timestamp on the localtime (or what it's symlinked to) file? - what does "zdump -v /etc/localtime" return ? i.e., is it for the correct TZ?

Indiana timezone changing
I have a couple questions... I am in Indiana and our time zone is changing. I used to choose America/Indiana/Indianapolis as the zone and we are changing to Eastern. Question 1) Is there a command line only way to change my timezone? I dont have access to X to run system-config-time. Doing a "system-config-time --help" or "system-config-time -h" did not give any information.
