ZIL FOID
I need some clarification on the FOID handed to zil_commit. I wrote a dscript to watch entry and return of zil_commit_writer. Here is an example output: <pre> 2009 Jan 23 23:34:36: ZIL Commit : Seq 183211310 : FOID 129644 Completed in 0 ms 2009 Jan 23 23:34:36: ZIL Commit : Seq 183211324 : FOID 129644 Completed in 0 ms 2...

Pool import with failed ZIL device now possible ?
...rg/pipermail/zfs-discuss/2009-December/034340.html that is should be possible to import a pool with failed log devices (with or without data loss ?). >/ />/ Has the following error no consequences? />/ />/ Bug ID 6538021 />/ Synopsis Need a way to force pool startup when zil cannot be replayed />/ State 3-Accepted (Yes, that is a problem) />/ Link />/ http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6538021 / Er that bug should probably be closed as a duplicate. We now have this functionality. Can someone clarify in which release this...

Best way to measure performance of ZIL
Hi all, I currently have a OCZ Vertex 4 SSD as a ZIL device and am well aware of their exaggerated claims of sustained performance. I was thinking about getting a DRAM based ZIL accelerator such as Christopher George''s DDRDive, one of the STEC products, etc. Of course the key question i''m trying to answer is: is the price premium...

questions about zil
I recently got a new SSD (ocz vertex LE 50gb) It seems to work really well as a ZIL performance wise. My question is, how safe is it? I know it doesn''t have a supercap so lets'' say dataloss occurs....is it just dataloss or is it pool loss? also, does the fact that i have a UPS matter? the numbers i''m seeing are really nice....these are some nfs tar...

SAS/short stroking vs. SSDs for ZIL
Hi, as I have learned from the discussion about which SSD to use as ZIL drives, I stumbled across this article, that discusses short stroking for increasing IOPs on SAS and SATA drives: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/short-stroking-hdd,2157.html Now, I am wondering if using a mirror of such 15k SAS drives would be a good-enough fit for a ZIL on a zpool that i...

one ZIL SLOG per zpool?
I have three zpools on a server and want to add a mirrored pair of ssd''s for the ZIL. Can the same pair of SSDs be used for the ZIL of all three zpools or is it one ZIL SLOG device per zpool? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

dedicated ZIL/L2ARC
We are looking into the possibility of adding a dedicated ZIL and/or L2ARC devices to our pool. We are looking into getting 4 ? 32GB Intel X25-E SSD drives. Would this be a good solution to slow write speeds? We are currently sharing out different slices of the pool to windows servers using comstar and fibrechannel. We are currently getting around 300MB/sec...

L2ARC and ZIL on same SSD?
Are there any drawbacks to partition a SSD in two parts and use L2ARC on one partition, and ZIL on the other? Any thoughts? -- This message posted from opensolaris.org

can you recover a pool if you lose the zil (b134+)
I was messing around with a ramdisk on a pool and I forgot to remove it before I shut down the server. Now I am not able to mount the pool. I am not concerned with the data in this pool, but I would like to try to figure out how to recover it. I am running Nexenta 3.0 NCP (b134+). I have tried a couple of the commands (zpool import -f and zpool import -FX llift) root at

ZIL controls in Solaris 10 U4?
Is it true that Solaris 10 u4 does not have any of the nice ZIL controls that exist in the various recent Open Solaris flavors? I would like to move my ZIL to solid state storage, but I fear I can''t do it until I have another update. Heck, I would be happy to just be able to turn the ZIL off to see how my NFS on ZFS performance is effected before...

ZFS Storage Pool advice
This question is concerning ZFS. We have a Sun Fire V890 attached to a EMC disk array. Here''s are plan to incorporate ZFS: On our EMC storage array we will create 3 LUNS. Now how would ZFS be used for the best performance? What I''m trying to ask is if you have 3 LUNS and you want to create a ZFS storage pool, would it be better to have a storage pool per LUN or combine the 3

Separate Zil on HDD ?
...expect, NFS performance was pretty good getting close to 900gb/s. Now that I have moved to opensolaris, NFS performance is not very good, I''m guessing mainly due to the ''SYNC'' nature of NFS. I''ve seen various threads and most point at 2 options; 1. Disable the ZIL 2. Add independent log device/s I happen to have 2 x 250GB Western Digital RE3 7200rpm (Raid edition, rated for 24x7 usage etc) hard drives sitting doing nothing and was wondering whether it might speed up NFS, and possibly general filesystem usage, by adding these devices as log devices to the da...

How do separate ZFS filesystems affect performance?
...locking and synchronous writes whenever they are updated. Is moving the databases (IMAP metadata) to a separate ZFS filesystem likely to improve performance? I''ve heard that this is important, but I''m not clear why this is. Does each filesystem have its own queue in the ARC or ZIL? Here are some statistics taken while the server was busy and access was slow: # /usr/local/sbin/zilstat 5 5 N-Bytes N-Bytes/s N-Max-Rate B-Bytes B-Bytes/s B-Max-Rate ops <=4kB 4-32kB >=32kB 1126664 225332 515872 11485184 2297036 3469312 292 163 51...

ZIL SSD performance testing... -IOzone works great, others not so great
Hi folks, I would appreciate it if someone can help me understand some weird results I''m seeing with trying to do performance testing with an SSD offloaded ZIL. I''m attempting to improve my infrastructure''s burstable write capacity (ZFS based WebDav servers), and naturally I''m looking at implementing SSD based ZIL devices. I have a test machine with the crummiest hard drive I can find installed in it, Quantum Fireball ATA-1...

ZFS and NFS
...rectory, and this can''t changed. We are having issues with the EMC appliance and RPC timeouts on the NFS lookup. I am looking doing is moving one of the major NFS exports to as Sun 25k using VCS to cluster a ZFS RAIDZ that is then NFS exported. For performance I am looking at disabling ZIL, since these files have almost identical names. What are Sun''s thoughts on this? ------------------------------------ Thanks for any insight. -- Joe Cicardo Systems Engineer Sun Microsystems, Inc. joe.cicardo at sun.com 972-546-3887

creating a fast ZIL device for $200
Recently, I''ve been reading through the ZIL/slog discussion and have the impression that a lot of folks here are (like me) interested in getting a viable solution for a cheap, fast and reliable ZIL device. I think I can provide such a solution for about $200, but it involves a lot of development work. The basic idea: the main problem when us...

SCSI write retry errors on ZIL SSD drives...
...d motherboards). Up until now, all of the hardware has had a single 24-disk expander / backplane -- but we recently got one of the new SC847-based models with 24 disks up front and 12 in the back -- a dual backplane setup. We''re using two SSD''s in the front backplane as mirrored ZIL/OS (I don''t think we have the 4K alignment set up correctly) and two drives in the back as L2ARC. The rest of the disks are 1TB SATA disks which make up a single large zpool via three 8-disk RAIDZ2''s. As you can see, we don''t have the server maxed out on drives... In a...

zvol wrapped in a vmdk by Virtual Box and double writes?
...uest level, the underlying bare metal ZFS writes 200M, as observed by iostat. This doesn''t happen on the VM''s that are using RAW slices. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be happening here? I can appreciate that if everything comes through as a sync write, it goes to the ZIL first, then to it''s final resting place - but it seems a little over the top that it really is double. I have also had a play with sync=, primarycache settings and a few other things but it doesn''t seem to change the behavious Again - I''m looking for thoughts here - a...

Bursty writes - why?
I have a 24 x 1TB system being used as an NFS file server. Seagate SAS disks connected via an LSI 9211-8i SAS controller, disk layout 2 x 11 disk RAIDZ2 + 2 spares. I am using 2 x DDR Drive X1s as the ZIL. When we write anything to it, the writes are always very bursty like this: ool 488K 20.0T 0 0 0 0 xpool 488K 20.0T 0 0 0 0 xpool 488K 20.0T 0 0 0 0 xpool 488K 20.0T 0 232 0 29.0M xpool...
