Dear list,
has anyone written a package/function in R for computing a point-
biserial resp. biserial correlation?
Thanks in advance

Replacing backslashes with slashes
...ble.
I would have expected something like:
gsub("\\","\/","c:\My Documents\data.dat")
to work but it does not (incorrect regular expression).
Note that I have no control on the string which is returned from the system (no
such problem under Linux BTW).
Any idea ?

Wrong symbol rendering in plots (Ubuntu)
Hi I am having problems with the rendering of scientific symbols (mu and
degree) in my plots. Whenever I use these symbols they are rendered
changed (mu is changed to the proportionality symbol and degree is
changed to something resembling a gamma) in the X-device. If I make a
pdf of the plot and open the file in Evince or Okular symbols are also
rendered wrong, however if I open the file

New package announcement: R2STATS, a GUI for fitting GLM and GLMM

standard statistical tests may well be presented as a simple comparison
between GLMs and this is the way I go with my students here. This allows
an integrated presentation for almost all common (and simple) situations
in social sciences.
More information is available on my webpage :
http://yvonnick.noel.free.fr/r2stats [in French for the moment, although
the package is in English].
Installing the package is done from a temporary repository:

Matrix inversion
I cannot find what is the function label for matrix inversion in R. I have
found 'ginv' for the moore-penrose in the MASS package, but there is
probably a simple inversion operator in the base package. Where can I find
it?

Can I test if there are statistical significance between different rows in R*C table?
Dear friends,
My R*C table is as follow:
better
good
bad
Goup1
16
71
37
Group2
0
4
61
Group3
1
6
57
Can I test if there are statistical significant between Group1 and
Group2, Group2 and Group3, Group1 and Group2, taking into the multiple
comparisons?
The table can be set up using the following program:
a<-matrix(data=c(16,71,37,0,4,61,1,6,57),nrow=3,byrow=TRUE)
Thanks

The 'subset matching' challenge
...provided. The problem is: This
approach creates a whole matrix of subsets of r integers among 1:n,
which rapidly gives huge matrices, and this is clearly not optimal for
the real data provided above.
Would anyone have a suggestion as to an alternative and more efficient
strategy?
Good luck,

Installing ESS under EMACS

As I am no expert at Lisp (nor at EMACS), could somebody be so kind as to tell me what are the (probably very simple) manipulations to do to have all this work?

Lattice: Superimposing histograms with different colors and transparency effects

also vary from group to group, but unlike the 'col=' argument, adding a
'border=mycolors' argument in the histogram function call change colors
from bar to bar!
Thank you very much in advance.

New Book: Statistical Psychology with R [in French]
...ed on real data with the
help of the AtelieR and R2STATS packages (a GUI for GLM and GLMM in R).
In addition to classical and Bayesian inference on means, direct and
Bayesian inference on effect size and standardized effects are presented.
I hope you might find this book useful,

I am no Linux guru and wonder whether some good soul would have a hint...

Similarly I would be interested in any R implementation of nonlinear

ReInstalling packages

The readline library is under /lib on my system and I have added this path to
the FLIBS and LIBPATH fields in /usr/lib/R/etc/Makeconf. I also have added it
to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH environmental variable (not so clean but...) and it
doesn't work neither !
Any hint ?

An R interface to Model Building

To anyone who is interested, I'm trying to learn a bit more about
developing applications in R with user interfaces. I've been playing
around with gWidgets to develop a model building interface.
I'd appreciate any comments, suggestions, or guidance on how to better
structure my R code and organize the programming task. In addition,
any suggestions for features and

How to run Shapiro-Wilk test for each grouped variable?

I have these working commands:

but I must to change the variable number manualy. How to automate
