The last time I saw something like this was when the domain had started
out as an early Windows domain (2k, 2003) and had migrated to a Samba
domain, could this be what has happened here ?
Does 'samba-tool dns zonelist <YOUR_DC>' show anything ?

I thought you said that you had no viable backup ?

Internal DNS not coming up in 4.18.0
Hello Rowland,
Find the answers to your questions & suggestions.
Does 'samba-tool dns zonelist <YOUR_DC>' show anything ?
No - It results in "rpc server error - WERR_DNS_ERROR_DS_UNAVAILABLE"
samba-tool dns zonecreate' can create a dns zone, though I have never
tried to create a forest zone.
I tried this. But results in same error - "rpc server error -

To see which DC is used by Windows client: open a MSDOS console, type
"set", look for LOGONSERVER=\\<your_dc>
<your_dc> is the DC used to connect on.
If issue comes from one DC I would have on sysvol synchronisation between
DC, ACL on all sysvol, DNS entries (but I don't think that's a DNS issue if
you have only GPO issue).

It was always a samba domain. I started with Samba 4.7.6 about 5 years
back. Kept upgrading it over a period.

Well that disposes of one theory, Win 2k domains used a different dns
system, but as yours never started out that way, we can discount it.

I'm not an expert in idmap (at all in fact :p) but I thought idmap stuffs
were here to replace RFC2307 UID/GID declared into AD/LDAP objects.
In others words, if you configure correctly idmap into smb.conf I expect
you don't need any more declaring UID/GID for machine accounts.
Anyway here my machines get access to their GPO: I tested one computer's
GPO this morning, the one giving

Internal DNS not coming up in 4.18.0
Hello Rowland,
ldbsearch command is returning 0 records.
# returned 0 records
# 0 entries
# 0 referrals
On the backup front, I take the back up using samba-tool backup command
and it was successful.
Can I create a new ForestZone using samba-tool? I asking this question
as RSAT is not connecting to DNS server.
Thanks & Regards,
