yarrow unix source
Hi guys We at ZKS were also interested in yarrow under unix. However the implementation that counterpane have on their web page doesn't correspond to the paper -- it is a pretty different design. Also the windows code is hairy in the extreme -- I decided to reimplement it from scratch from the paper, rather than try to look at that windows...

FreeBSD Security Advisory FreeBSD-SA-08:11.arc4random
...based on the key stream generator of the RC4 cipher. It is expected to be cryptographically strong, and used throughout the FreeBSD kernel for a variety of purposes, some of which rely on its cryptographic strength. arc4random(9) is periodically reseeded with entropy from the FreeBSD kernel's Yarrow random number generator, which gathers entropy from a variety of sources including hardware interrupts. During the boot process, additional entropy is provided to the Yarrow random number generator from userland, helping to ensure that adequate entropy is present for cryptographic purposes. II....

ssh-rand-helper
Now that ssh-rand-helper has been segregated into a separate program, I'd like to revisit an old question about its entropy gathering. - would it be desirable to make it possible for ssh-rand-helper to fall back to external commands if PRNGD cannot be reached, instead of choosing one or the other at compile time? - When using PRNGD, the program gets 48 bytes of entropy from PRNGD,

Killing the builtin entropy code
...eeded, we will fork+suid(user)+exec a subprocess "ssh-rand-helper" which will return 64 bytes of randomness to stdout. This will be used to seed OpenSSL's PRNG. 512 bits should be enough for anyone :) ssh-rand-helper may be a program which fetches randomness from PRNGd, it could be a Yarrow implementation or it could be an adaptation of the current entropy code to run in a one-shot mode. I'll certainly implement a PRNGd ssh-rand-helper, if time permits I'll do one of the others. This takes all the responsability out of OpenSSH for collecting random numbers and allows sites t...

OpenSSH entropy/PRNG (was: Why does ssh try to run df, netstat, arp ...?)
...ge which system commands are used as inputs to the Pseudo Random Noise Generator. For our network here, for example, I have commented out the call to arp since that one change decreases SSH session startup time significantly on our Solaris boxen. Related question: Is anyone actively trying to get Yarrow or some other algorithmic source of entropy into OpenSSH? I suppose this is really a question for the OpenSSL folks... New entropy source proposal.
Hi. I've been playing a bit with "use sound card as an entropy source" idea. This simple program does what I wanted: http://people.freebsd.org/~pjd/misc/sndrand.tbz The program is very simple, it should be run with two arguments: % sndtest /dev/dspW 1048576 > rand.data This command will generate 1MB of random data. With my sound card: pcm0: <Intel ICH3 (82801CA)>

problems with eudora
Hi everyone, i just installed dovecot in Fedora Core release 1 (Yarrow). When accessing from a eudora 6.1 client, first it gave ssl authentication problems. I fixed disabling them in eudora, but now it authenticates ok and then it says that there is no inbox for that user. Any idea? While installing Hmisc...
Dear R-Gurus: This afternoon I was installing the "Hmisc" package. I use R in Linux (Fedora Core 1 (yarrow)) on a Compaq presario with 128 MB RAM laptop. Opening an R session as a root user (superuser), I issued install.packages("Hmisc") and waited. R downloaded the package, installation was going on, and on the standard output I could see that a list of "documentation filenames"...

Of course, doing this kind of thing in ruby itself is simple - I''ve done this for simultaneous access to MySql and postgres, as in when I transfered tables from the one to the other. Collecting entropy from device_attach() times.
...seems that those times have enough variation that we can use it for entropy harvesting. It happens even before root is mounted, so pretty early. On the machine I'm testing it, which has minimal kernel plus NIC driver I see 75 device_attach() calls. I'm being very careful and advertising to yarrow that each call has only 4 bits of entropy (most of the time there is much more). This gives 300 bits of entropy on this machine before we even start init. For real hardware like sound card it takes between 34647162 and 35548675 cycles to run device_attach(), so the difference here is 901513. If al...

seeding dev/random in 5.5
I was doing some regression testing in 5.5: Specifically testing booting up a 'virgin' hard disk from a clean install. I was testing what happened if the 300 second timeout happened vs hitting <return> for 'fast+insecure' startup and punching in a bunch of random garbage. I found that for some reason, on a 2.4Ghz Celeron, the 'sysctl -a' and 'date' seeding

ISOLINUX fails at boot on Award BIOS v6.00PG
Hello, I don't know if it's ISOLINUX or a broken BIOS, this is the first time ever seeing this error. "Extremely broken BIOS" on a EPIA -M10 BIOS Rev 2.07 (latest ver available) EDEN VIA mini-ITX mobo. ISOLINUX on RH8 ver 1.75, RH9 ver 2.00 and Yarrow ver 2.06 all produce the same type of error. RH 7.3 and Lindows boot and build without any problem but I don't think they use ISOLINUX as a boot loader.
