Xyratex disk units
I am wondering if any one knows of a way to manage Xyratex disk shelves from CentOS (in particular CentOS 4). More details: Some years ago I installed a NAS unit from Exanet which consists of 2 rebadged IBM x3650 head nodes and a couple of Xyratex disk shelves with a total of 96 TB of raw disk, connected by fibre channel. The operating system is based on...

Another curious fact is that I can assign the same devices to 2 VMs. I would have expected an error, but perhaps it is allowed to share devices. Anyone have any thoughts on what I''m missing? Understanding lustre setup ..
Hello, I have been reading http://wiki.lustre.org/images/1/1b/Hadoop_wp_v0.4.2.pdf for setting up Hadoop over lustre. Generally in hadoop setup, we have 1 Namenode and various number of datanodes. If I want to setup the same keeping Lustre as backend, in the document it is mentioned that: ".............Our experiments run on cluster with 8 nodes in total, one is mds/namenode, the rest are

Balancing I/O Load
...rocessor, dual-core Opterons (275s) with 4GB RAM each. They are running CentOS 5 w/ a 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5Lustre (patched lustre, smp kernel) and the deadline I/O scheduler. If it matters, our OSTs are atop LVM2 volumes (for management). The back-end storage is all Fibre-channel RAID (Xyratex). We have tuned the servers and know that we can get roughly 500MB/s per server across a striped *local* file system.

Cheap Array Enclosure for ZFS pool?
We have 14 500GB PATA drives left over from another project. Given that ZFS seems to prefer working with jbod''s, does anyone know of an inexpensive enclosure with an fcal interface to host the disks? This message posted from opensolaris.org

write RPC & congestion
Hi, thanks for previous help. I have some question about Lustre RPC and the sequence of events that occur during large concurrent write() involving many processes and large data size per process. I understand there is a mechanism of flow control by credits, but I''m a little unclear on how it works in general after reading the "networking & io protocol" white paper. Is

possible file corruption
Hello, I have a troubling issue with random file corruption using either lustre 1.8.6 (internal Cray lustre) and lustre 2.1 (sonexion - produced by xyratex). Randomly, our users will come across an issue with files either having 0 size, or being corrupted. The 0 size files are usually ascii files (which are normally created with simple cat and awk statements, serially), while the corrupted files are weather data (grib) files that most of the time ar...

Lustre and cross-platform portability
Whamcloud and EMC are jointly investigating how to be able to contribute the Lustre client code into the upstream Linux kernel. As a prerequisite to this, EMC is working to clean up the Lustre client code to better match the kernel coding style, and one of the anticipated major obstacles to upstream kernel submission is the heavy use of code abstraction via libcfs for portability to other

ext3 filesystem corruption
...ause. In general... We are running RedHat WS 3 Update 6, 2.4.21-40.2.ELsmp or 2.4.21-37.ELsmp We have a small SAN system that looks like this 3 NFS servers each containing 2 Qlocic hba's connected to 2 qlogic switches connected to an nstor (now xyratex) 6TB raid system containing 2 (active-active) controllers. On the first 2 occasions one of the controllers was failed over. On a 3rd occasion both SAN switches lost power, and the hosts and raid lost communication. On all occasions the qlocic failover driver tried to start up on the al...

zfs and jbod-storage
Hi. I''m managing a HDS storage system which is slightly larger than 100 TB and we have used approx. 3/4. We use vxfs. The storage system is attached to a solaris 9 on sparc via a fiberswitch. The storage is shared via nfs to our webservers. If I was to replace vxfs with zfs I could utilize raidz(2) instead of the built-in hardware raid-controller. Are there any jbod-only storage

openfiler (was: using CentOS as an iSCSI server?)

Here is something I am currently lokoing at, and wondering if you'd considered it or if anyone here has done it. I've got a bunch of existing hardware - really good IBM stuff that is all installed with CentOS (with a few exceptions). We want to move to virtualization, but

JBOD recommendation for ZFS usage
Dear all Sorry if it''s kind of off-topic for the list but after talking to lots of vendors I''m running out of ideas... We are looking for JBOD systems which (1) hold 20+ 3.3" SATA drives (2) are rack mountable (3) have all the nive hot-swap stuff (4) allow 2 hosts to connect via SAS (4+ lines per host) and see all available drives as disks, no RAID volume. In a

Interested in contributing to Lustre
Hi all, I am a grad student at Carnegie Mellon University. I had my course work in advanced storage systems in previous semester, and I am interested to work on Lustre. I prefer to take up a project that could be completed in a duration of a month or two. Since I am a novice w.r.t. my familiarity with Lustre code base, I seek your opinion to choose a project from the list:
