xls2csv.pl: Script to translate Excel files into CSV

Excel -> *.CSV in Unix (Linux) command line?
A colleague has a dozen of excel sheets and also expects to get updates regularly. He could open these in M$-Excel and export as *.csv manually, "bring back to Unix" and then read into R. Of course there must be options to start programming this in something like visual basic, but we wouldn't to really want to... We also know that probably Gnumeric could do the job (since the xls

xls to csv conversion via WinXP's context menu?
Frequently I need to convert a .xls to a .csv (for import into R) and I do this by opening the file in excel and saving it as a csv. I would rather do this using WinXP's context menu (right click the xls, choose "convert to csv") but I don't know of a utility that does this. Any ideas? Thanks, Mark

reading xls files using read.xls and xlsReadWrite
Dear R list, I am trying to read in .xls files. I have tried using package 'gdata', I get the following error. > dataset <- read.xls("June.xls") Wide character in print at /Library/Frameworks/R.framework/Versions/2.14/Resources/library/gdata/perl/ xls2csv.pl line 262. Seems like this is a problem coming from Perl? I tried to install package 'xlsReadWrite', it does not show up on my list of packages. I am using a Mac. Excel to R

They are in the standard form of a one row header followed by rows of data, one record per row EXCEPT that there are a few rows of comments before the header. The number of rows of comments varies. For Excel files of this form without comments I have had success with: require(RODBC) z <-

Importing an Excel file
Hello, R users, I am a very beginner of R and tried read.csv to import an excel file after saving an excel file as csv. But it added alternating rows of fictitious NA values after row number 16. When I applied read.delim, there were trailing several commas at the end of each row after row number 16 instead of NA values. Appreciate your help. Kyong [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Maybe I can do all of it in R but I can't see how yet. My situation is that our IT Department can give me loads of XLS files about patients one of our services have seen. The are one per patient
