...I can accomplish this with a free utility, Baird's dataload that I found on the net. This will convert the Excel files to text and then the text can be processed using R to locate the start of the header and only process the remainder of the file. (There is also another free utility called xlhtml that I don't use, but could have, that does this too.) Thus at this point I have an adequate automated solution. I gather from reading the back-issues of r-help that it should be possible (modulo a number of caveats) to read an excel (yuck!) file into R using RODBC. I'm getting tired of converting spreadsheets that someone else updates to csv so my perl scripts can push the data into a mysql database. Is there a better way? I haven't had much luck with perl-Spreadsheet-ParseExcel (and find it odd that yum prefers the .32 version from epel over .57 from rpmforge anyway). Is the current CPAN version better? Or the equivalent java tools? Or

I tried to use the computer from something else, and it was being drastically slowed down by some leftover processes, which turned out to be xlhtml. That is something that converts Excel files. Apparently, some excel files got into the libraries, and they were causing the indexing to hang completely. I am now running everything again, starting from scratch, and it might work.
