Excel to R
...I can accomplish this with a free utility, Baird's dataload that
I found on the net. This will convert the Excel files to text
and then the text can be processed using R to locate the start of
the header and only process the remainder of the file. (There is
also another free utility called xlhtml that I don't use, but could
have, that does this too.) Thus at this point I have an
adequate automated solution.
Nevertheless, I was wondering, for sake of interest, if there is
some solution in R that does not involve such an external program
such as dataload or xlhtml.
Thanks.

Extract text from Microsoft PowerPoint files
Hello CentOS people,
I'm wondering if there are command tools like antiword and docx2txt for
Microsoft PowerPoint files (.ppt and .pptx). The idea is to extract
text from PowerPoint files. Sorry this isn't exactly about CentOS, but
I'd really like it if Yum has something. I tried xlhtml, but it hasn't
been updated in a while and isn't exactly wanting to work on CentOS 5.
Thank you,

Excel *.xls files, RODBC
I gather from reading the back-issues of r-help that it should be
possible (modulo a number of caveats) to read an excel (yuck!) file
into R using RODBC. I have obtained and installed ODBC and the RODBC
package, but cannot for the life of me figure out how to go about
it. Can anyone give me a simple recipe?
I have an excel file on cdrom, say:
/mnt/cdrom/melvin.xls
I have started R and loaded

Rates Importer Tool
Hi All,
new to the list. Wondering if anyone has / knows of, a good rate importer
tool that can be used to standardize and normalize the ratesheets / rate
decks etc. obtained from various carriers so they can be analysed and
imported into a DB or be saved as a CSV or something?
Thanks so much in advance

excel parser (preferably perl)?
I'm getting tired of converting spreadsheets that someone else updates
to csv so my perl scripts can push the data into a mysql database. Is
there a better way? I haven't had much luck with
perl-Spreadsheet-ParseExcel (and find it odd that yum prefers the .32
version from epel over .57 from rpmforge anyway). Is the current CPAN
version better? Or the equivalent java tools? Or

Fwd: Re: RSiteSearch, sos, rdocumentation.org, ...?
Don't do anything yet. I may have found the problem by accident.
I tried to use the computer from something else, and it was being
drastically slowed down by some leftover processes, which turned out
to be xlhtml. That is something that converts Excel files. Apparently,
some excel files got into the libraries, and they were causing the
indexing to hang completely.
I am now running everything again, starting from scratch, and it might
work. (I'm doing it wrong, but it is 3/4 done. I will do it right

Fwd: Re: RSiteSearch, sos, rdocumentation.org, ...?
Hello, All:
Jonathan Baron is "giving up" maintaining the RSiteSearch database.
This breaks three things: (1) The R Site Search web service that
Baron has maintained. (2) The RSiteSearch function in the utils
package. (3) The sos package, for which I'm the maintainer and lead
author.
Might someone else be willing to take these over?
For me,
