Q about dpi, fonts, gnome, Xorg etc
...resolution' and check that Xorg was giving something reasonable.. eg dimensions: 1600x1200 pixels (423x317 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch So far so good. With this new fangled gnome and fontconfig stuff, you also need to set up some X-resources with: xrdb -query |grep Xft Xft.antialias: 1 Xft.dpi: 96 Xft.hinting: 1 Xft.hintstyle: hintfull Xft.rgba: none ... and to inform gnome-settings-daemon with gnome-appearance-properties->Font->Details->dpi which is the same as: gconftool-2 -s --type float /desktop/gnome/font_rendering/dpi 96 It...

fontconfig and FT_Get_BDF_Property
...config to 2.2.0, fc-cache -vf gives me an error: /usr/libexec/ld-elf.so.1: /usr/X11R6/lib/libfontconfig.so.1: Undefined symbol "FT_Get_BDF_Property" when it tries to build the cache for non bitmapped fonts. I have: 1. updated my CVS ports tree 2. rebuilt fontconfig, freetype, expat and Xft using portupgrade (portupgrade -frR ) 3. rebuilt my all (portupgrade -afr) and fc-cache still chokes. XFree86-clients, XFree86-fontScalable and several other ports also fail to build with the same error. There is only one copy of libfontconfig.so.1 in ldconfig -r. I'm sure that there is som...

Mozilla port.
I have a very strange problem with Mozilla since I updated it to the latest stable. The font used on the menus are rendered extermly badly such as lots of white spaces between the letters, large blocky font. The font option does not seem to change any of those fonts which makes me think it maybe something to do with X11. However, none of the other things I use have any font issues... Any idea

fontconfig-2.1.93 considered more harmful
There is an ongoing thread "fontconfig-2.1.92 considered harmful" on -CURRENT. Because I have not moved to -CURRENT, I post this to -STABLE. Since I upgraded to fontconfig-2.1.93 (on Apr 14) a lot of ports start to complain a lot of "Cannot fork: Resource temporarily unavailable" errors. What resource ? I inserted top into my ports build script to notice that a lot of

QtRuby
Hello, Has anyone tested QtRuby? I''m doing a small OpenGL application http://www.discretizer.org and just want to know the arguments for staying with fxruby. This is what I have discovered: Pros: -Fxruby seems to have a very nice OpenGL support (FXGLViewer) which is what I really need. -Nice looks. No unnecessary theming support. -Very fast and light on system resources. Cons: -No

Both need to be enabled. Both work for me using R 1.6.1 under RH 8.0, however I am using the Gtk2/Xft enabled version of Mozilla 1.2b, which is available at: http://komodo.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/experimental/gtk2/ This version, while pre-release, has been very stable and makes a major difference in readability. I am also using Java V1.4.1, which is available here: http://java.sun.com/j...

Quick notes on R with F7
...me issues with VT switching, which also seems to cause problems for the 'Fast User Switching' features new to F7. The symptoms include partially drawn windows, incomplete logins and X freezes. 5. Emacs 22 has been released and is part of F7. From a quick look, it would appear that the 'xft/anti-aliasing' font support available from the CVS branch of 22 is not part of the formal stable release tree. Thus I will continue to use the version 23 Unicode branch from CVS, along with the latest ECB (cvs snap) and CEDET (1.0pre4 was just released today) tool versions. 6. The rumors/inten...

Possible solution for Mozilla/help.start() search problems
...e past week. All R comments pertain to 1.6.1. Earlier in the week using a development build of Mozilla under RH 8.0, I was able to get the help.start() based search engine to work with both Java and JavaScript enabled. This was using what I believed to be the V1.2b branch of Mozilla, in which both Xft anti-aliasing font support and Gtk2 support for RH 8.0 was included. There are RH 8.0 specific RPMS located at: http://komodo.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla/nightly/experimental/gtk2/ Upon verifying the version number however, this branch turns out to be V1.3a of Mozilla, not 1.2b. At least this is what...

Would you switch jobs for the chance to use Textmate?
Lets say you had a pretty decent job, but your company mandated use of emacs. The poaching employer offers you a free copy of Textmate(tm). Would you jump ship solely in order to use Textmate at company B? Cheers, Dave -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

XFree86-devel package error
I'm not sure if this has been brought up before, but there is error with the XFree86-devel package on CentOS3. Both gccmakedep and xft-config are broken symlinks to archexec in the folder /usr/X11R6/bin. Is there another RPM that provides archexec? This is not a problem on CentOS4. It does look like RHEL suffers from the same problem. -- Regards, John Quaglieri InterServer, Inc 201-643-0135x101

Pre-release FXRuby binary gems for testing
All, A couple of new build platforms have come into the picture since the last FXRuby release and I''m trying to make sure they''re supported. That is to say, I want to be able to provide precompiled binary gems so that users on those platforms don''t have to build everything from source. I think I''m there, but I could use your help testing if you have

1600x900 not available
My laptop is a Dell XPS-13 running CentOS 7.? It has a 13" 1920x1080 screen and it's a bit difficult for my mid-40s eyesight.? Fedora and Debian, on this laptop, give me the option of choosing 1600x900 which is much easier for me to read but CentOS doesn't show this resolution as available. I followed the steps I found in a post on stackexchange using xrandr, substituting
