Can not get remote X connections to work on CentOS 4.1
...CentOS 4.1. I've never had this problem before, and I've been using X Windows since 1990, but I can't get remote X connections to work: $ hostname host00 $ echo $DISPLAY :0.0 $ xhost + access control disabled, clients can connect from any host $ rsh host01 $ xdpyinfo -d host00:0.0 xdpyinfo: unable to open display "host00:0.0" Both hosts are running CentOS 4.1 and SELinux is disabled. I know I can get this to wok with ssh, but that is not the point. Also, it's not a host name resolution problem, as substituting the IP address in the above...

ssh x11 forwarding problem
...etting X11UseLocalhost no in /etc/ssh/sshd_config This worked in CentOS 3 but does not in CentOS 4 (or Fedora 4 for that matter), and I'm guessing it is a XFree86 vs. Xorg issue. Now, when using X11UseLocalhost no no X applications work ssh myserver # echo $DISPLAY myserver.fqdn:10.0 # xdpyinfo xdpyinfo: unable to open display "myserver.fqdn:10.0". I have X11 forwarding set up on the client side by default. on the other hand if I don't use tunneling, but set DISPLAY=myclient: 0 and xhost +myserver on the client then the application works. I prefer to use tunneling if...

X11 device distortion (PR#10666)

This results in wrongly proportioned plots, wrongly positioned text etc. Other devices are not affected. I already asked

X11 XVideo extension supported?
...The Playa, also installed Windows Media Player 6.4. They can both display DivX 4.01 material with sound. This is simply great :-) However, the performance is not that great. Especially when going fullscreen the cpu is overburdened (slide show). I assume that the XVideo extension is not used yet? xdpyinfo says I have the XVideo extension and xvinfo says I have YUY2, YV12, UYVY an dI420 image formats. Is support for the XVideo extension being worked on or is it already included (and I did not enable it)? regards, Bernhard Ege

Monitor power save question
I decided to try the x86_64 version of CentOS 5 on my new desktop since it has an Athlon 64 X2 CPU. The one really perplexing oddity is that the monitor no longer goes to power save mode (standby) if the system is idle long enough (e.g., overnight). The "power management" option is set to put the display to sleep after thirty minutes. The display gets blanked but it never goes to

App not finding /dev/nvidia0 for /dev/dri/card0 not found on inspiron 8200 with nvidia chipset
I have source for a program that is attempting to open /dev/nvidia0 then on failure open /dev/dri/card0 to get some vsync settings. Neither of those two files is found on my laptop in /dev. Is this because of udev? I cant find anthing in /dev that might be used instead. Any ideas on what to open to read vsync information from X windows? Thanks, Jerry

Q about dpi, fonts, gnome, Xorg etc
...l manner. My needs are pretty simple - I just want 8-point (or 9-point etc) fonts to appear on the screen as 8-point font - ie more or less 8 * 1/72 inches = 2.82mm high. More or less, I'm not insisting it be exact, but at least not 1mm or 5mm high. In the (glorious) past I was able to look at xdpyinfo |egrep 'dimension| resolution' and check that Xorg was giving something reasonable.. eg dimensions: 1600x1200 pixels (423x317 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch So far so good. With this new fangled gnome and fontconfig stuff, you also need to set up some X-resources wi...

compiz aiglx fbconfig-depth-fix seg-fault
glXGetVisualFromFBConfig(dpy, fbConfigs[j]) returns a null pointer I'm up to date on drm, mesa, xserver and ati driver. Compiz seems to work fine, though, if I just don't apply the fbconfig-depth-fix patch. I'm not sure if I'm missing anything, though, because I'm not running gnome and obviously some of the effects won't work. I get nothing without Kristian's

[Bug 26194] New: nouveau reports DPI correctly in Xorg.0.log, but value reported by X incorrect
...QAContact: xorg-team at lists.x.org A bit odd: $ grep -E 'DPI|dimensions' /var/log/Xorg.0.log (**) NOUVEAU(0): Display dimensions: (290, 180) mm (**) NOUVEAU(0): DPI set to (112, 112) 290mm x 180mm and 112x112 DPI are indeed correct (1280x800, 13.3" widescreen), however: $ xdpyinfo | grep -E 'dimensions|resolution' dimensions: 1280x800 pixels (338x211 millimeters) resolution: 96x96 dots per inch X appears to be getting bogus data, which screws up font sizing. I'm on a MacBook Pro 13" with GeForce 9400M (NVac). Using nouveau-drm from the kernel tr...
