Replacing HDD in x4500
The vendor wanted to come in and replace an HDD in the 2nd X4500, as it
was "constantly busy", and since our x4500 has always died miserably in
the past when a HDD dies, they wanted to replace it before the HDD
actually died.
The usual was done, HDD replaced, resilvering started and ran for about
50 minutes. Then the system hung, same as always, a...

Replacement disks for Sun X4500
I am bumping this thread because I too have the same question ... can I put modern 3TB disks (hitachi deskstars) into an old x4500 ?
If not, would the x4540 accept them ?

NLM_DENIED_NOLOCKS Solaris 10u5 X4500
This was previously posed to the sun-managers mailing list but the only
reply I received recommended I post here at well.
We have a production Solaris 10u5 / ZFS X4500 file server which is
reporting NLM_DENIED_NOLOCKS immediately for any nfs locking request. The
lockd does not appear to be busy so is it possible we have hit some sort of
limit on the number of files that can be locked? Are there any items to
check before restarting lockd / statd. This appears to...

improve meta data performance
We have a SunFire X4500 running Solaris 10U5 which does about 5-8k nfs ops
of which about 90% are meta data. In hind sight it would have been
significantly better to use a mirrored configuration but we opted for 4 x
(9+2) raidz2 at the time. We can not take the downtime necessary to change
the zpool configuration.
We ne...

questions about ZFS Send/Receive
Hi guys,
we are proposing a customer a couple of X4500 (24 Tb) used as NAS
(i.e. NFS server).
Both server will contain the same files and should be accessed by
different clients at the same time (i.e. they should be both active)
So we need to guarantee that both x4500 contain the same files:
We could simply copy the contents on both x4500 , which is...

X4500 device disconnect problem persists
After applying 125205-07 on two X4500 machines running Sol10U4 and
removing "set sata:sata_func_enable = 0x5" from /etc/system to
re-enable NCQ, I am again observing drive disconnect error messages.
This in spite of the patch description which claims multiple fixes
in this area:
6587133 repeated DMA command timeouts and devi...

X4500 ILOM thinks disk 20 is faulted, ZFS thinks not.
Hey Guys,
Have any of y''all seen a condition where the ILOM considers a disk
faulted (status is 3 instead of 1), but ZFS keeps writing to the disk
and doesn''t report any errors? I''m going to do a scrub tomorrow and
see what comes back. I''m curious what caused the ILOM to fault the
disk. Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Best Regards,
Jason

iscsi target problems on snv_97
I''ve recently upgraded my x4500 to Nevada build 97, and am having problems with the iscsi target.
Background: this box is used to serve NFS underlying a VMware ESX environment (zfs filesystem-type datasets) and presents iSCSI targets (zfs zvol datasets) for a Windows host and to act as zoneroots for Solaris 10 hosts. For optima...

x4500/x4540 does the internal controllers have a bbu?
Has anyone worked with a x4500/x4540 and know if the internal raid controllers have a bbu? I''m concern that we won''t be able to turn off the write-cache on the internal hds and SSDs to prevent data corruption in case of a power failure.

C''mon ARC, stay small...
Running an mmap-intensive workload on ZFS on a X4500, Solaris 10 11/06
(update 3). All file IO is mmap(file), read memory segment, unmap, close.
Tweaked the arc size down via mdb to 1GB. I used that value because
c_min was also 1GB, and I was not sure if c_max could be larger than
c_min....Anyway, I set c_max to 1GB.
After a workload run....:

[Fwd: [Fwd: The results of iozone stress on NFS/ZFS and SF X4500 shows the very bad performance in read but good in write]]
Dear ALL,
IHAC who would like to use Sun Fire X4500 to be the NFS server for the
backend services, and would like to see the potential performance gain
comparing to their existing systems. However the outputs of the I/O
stress test with iozone show the mixed results as follows:
* The read performance sharply degrades (almost down to 1/20, i....

Slow reads with ZFS+NFS
...(Reading from the DB
with pre-fetching enabled was taking 4-5 times as long than with it
disabled.)
Write speed seems to be fine. Testing is showing ~95 MB/s, which seems
pretty decent considering there''s been no real network tuning done.
The NFS server we''re testing is a Sun x4500, configured with a storage pool
consisting of 20x 2-disk mirrors, using separate SSD for logging. It''s
running the latest version of Nexenta Core. (We''ve also got a second x4500
in with a raidZ2 config, running OpenSolaris proper, showing the same issues
with reads.)

x4500 resilvering spare taking forever?
I''ve got a Thumper running snv_57 and a large ZFS pool. I recently noticed a drive throwing some read errors, so I did the right thing and zfs replaced it with a spare.
Everything went well, but the resilvering process seems to be taking an eternity:

other Oracle / Sun partner make a comparable system that is fully
supported by Oracle / Sun?

what are the abilities of the X2200-M2''s disk subsystem, and is ZFS going to
tickle any wierdness out of them?

Is the error threshold for a degraded device configurable?
I look after an x4500 for a client and wee keep getting drives marked as
degraded with just over 20 checksum errors.
Most of these errors appear to be driver or hardware related and thier
frequency increases during a resilver, which can lead to a death
spiral. The increase in errors within a vdev during a resilver...
