NHW Project - speed comparison with x265
Hello, I am very slowly working on the NHW Project.I recently made a speed comparison with x265 and wanted to share it with you. On my processor Intel Core i5-6400, in average the NHW encoder (totally unoptimized) is x10 times faster to encode than x265 (png decoding time removed), in average 30ms vs 300ms for a 512x512 24bit color image, and in average the NHW decoder (totally unoptimized)...

NHW Project - more test with x265 (HEVC) codec
Hello, I don't have worked on the NHW Project this past week (I also have to work on an other project) but I found time today to make an "extensive" testing of x265 (HEVC) and the NHW codec at high compression (-l7 setting). That's right that x265 is a very good codec! Really impressive. The NHW Project is not as good, it can only compete with x265 (HEVC) on quite high quality images, with hardly no blurred areas and JPEG artifacts. It's a pity the re...

NHW Project - Image comparison
Hello, Could some of you take a look at the image comparison between the NHW Project and x265 (HEVC) at high compression, available here: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ . I would be very very interested in your opinion, and it would help me to perfect the NHW Project. For me the NHW Project has more neatness, and x265 has more precision. Else, I was a little lazy these past months, as I did...

NHW Project - speed measurement 2 - very high compression
Hello, If it could be of interest, here are new speed measurement for -l13 very high compression setting. For x265 (HEVC), I use BPG codec, and this time I use -m 0 setting which uses the fastest encoding setting of x265.I run the .exe 10x times and I pick the best scores. So here are the timings at -l13 very high compression: Encode time: x265 (BPG -m 0): 80ms NHW: 20ms Decode time: x265 (BPG): 90ms NHW: 1...

Hello, First I have added a link on my demo blog page to Google Drive for the image comparison folder of NHW and x265 on rather good quality images. But be sure, as soon as you have sent me a free alternative host, I will upload there too! Link (for now) on: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ Do not hesitate to let me know if you would share the opinion that NHW is globally better than x265 (HEVC) at high compression...

NHW Project - new -l8 "very high compression" setting
...essings, the entropy coding schemes are less efficient, and so we could save for -l8 setting nearly 2KB per compressed .nhw file in average, will have to improve them... This new -l8 setting has so a good neatness to the detriment of details. It is still experimental, but I find it competitive with x265 (HEVC). Update at: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ Any feedback is very welcome! Cheers, Raphael -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... NHW Project - some results
...k message to let you know that I get back to NHW Project currently. I downloaded 20 images from the Internet with rather good quality (mainly faces), I compressed them at high compression -l7 setting with the NHW Project, and on 19 images out of 20, I visually prefer the results of NHW compared to x265 (HEVC)!!! -I can make available these 20x3=60 512x512 24bit bitmap images for those who want, just let me know.- I did not select these 20 images, it was the 20 first rather good quality images that Google Images gave me (I entered the name of an actress...). So I am quite satisfied with these re...

NHW Project - neatness metrics
...y find some time to get back to the NHW Project.I was thinking about making a technology demo, and I wanted to highlight the uniqueness of the NHW codec that is neatness/sharpness preserving or enhancement. With my eyes, I can see that the NHW codec has more neatness/sharpness than the other codecs (x265, x264, WebP, Rududu, JPEG,...), but for a demo there must be objective metrics, and this is where things complicates.... I have tried to make quickly a neatness/sharpness metrics but without luck, and it doesn't seem that easy... Would someone of you have a neatness metrics? Would help me a lo...

NHW Project - website, demo pages, algorithms dev,...
...te a website for the NHW Project, make demo pages of the technology, and all that with good visual design. It won't be such easy for me... For example, I can easily supply a description, explanation of the different steps of the algorithm, I can supply images encoded at mid-compression with NHW, x265, WebP, JPEG,... that (visually) show that the NHW codec has more neatness/sharpness than the others, I can supply encode/decode timings that show that unoptimized NHW codec is faster than the other codecs. Unfortunately, I don't have a neatness metrics, I won't be able to create and registe...

NHW Project - quality improvement for -l4,-l5 settings
Hello, I have improved quality for -l4 and -l5 high compression settings. These settings are now really better and very competitive, I now prefer them compared to x265 (HEVC). Update at: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ I am also working on -l6 quality setting, I can simply increase quantization for it but I am not totally satisfied with this solution for now... Looking for more advanced processing at these compression ratios, like an efficient denoising, as do HE...

NHW Project - good quality improvement & encoding speed improvement
Hello, Just a quick message to let you know that I have made good quality improvements for very high and extreme compression of the NHW Project (-l8 to -l15 quality settings). The NHW Project starts to be really competitive with x265 (HEVC) at these very high compression ratios.I even find the NHW Project visually better than x265 (HEVC) for mid and high compression! I have also improved encoding speed (C optimizations). More at: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ We can still save 2.5KB per .nhw compressed files. I wanted to co...

new -l16 "extreme" compression quality setting
...added a new -l16 "extreme" compression quality setting to the NHW Project. This new -l16 quality setting is surprisingly good actually, because I find it better on some images than -l15 quality setting whereas files size is smaller.I notably find this new -l16 quality setting better than x265 (HEVC). More at: http://nhwcodec.blogspot.com/ We can still save 2.5KB per .nhw compressed file. I however know that this work is hopeless because the industry will soon standardize AOM AV1 (AVIF) as the new image compression codec.I have also read on twitter that the new JPEG XL standard will b...

NHW Codec - new study on 30 images
Hello all, It's me again.Just a quick message to tell that I finally do not agree that HEVC (don't have tested AOM AV1 for now) is better than the NHW codec at mid compression. Last night, I dowloaded 30 images of Star Wars Rogue One on the web and I made another comparison with x265 (HEVC) for mid compression (-l2 to h2 settings for the NHW codec). Visually, I prefer the results of NHW codec on nearly 18 images out of 30 (60%), I find that more neatness is more pleasant, I prefer the results of x265 on 11 images (35%), more precision is more pleasant, and on 1 image the result...
