modem not initialised
...The options available to set up the modem (together with the settings from the windows machine) Modem type standard modem Com port com1 Baud rate 115200 Initialisation "&F" Start of call "D" End of call "HO" Termination "Z" The modem works fine using wvdial, so I can rule out (I think) hardware problems, connections & permissions. wvdial uses /dev/ttys0, so I have set up the programme to use com1. Any help would be much appreciated. Ian

Modem network card conflict
Hi All, Here's a strange one for you... I have a Linux box with a PCMCIA adapter PCI card in it. Plugged into said card is a cellular modem card. I can configure wvdial and dial the modem card perfectly. My ppp0 interface comes up and I can ping everything. I also have a network card on the motherboard. Once again, by itself the network card works correctly. That is with the modem NOT dialed up. Here's where things get interesting... If I flush the fir...

Kickstart, package always selected
...but kickstart/anaconda always insist on its installation (complaining that the package is missing). This is the %packages section of my ks file so far: %packages #-@ dialup kernel grub e2fsprogs lvm2 -slocate -bluez-utils -bluez-bluefw -bluez-hcidump-1.11-1.i386.rpm -isdn4k-utils -pcmcia-cs -ppp -wvdial -ypbind as you can see, ypbind is deselected in the ks file. Is ypbind a mandatory package? In the RPMS directory, I tried to determine what package may be requiring ypbind, but I could find any. This is what I used to determine what package may be requiring it: cd CentOS/RPMS for i in *.rpm;...

Help Wanted With kPPP
Hi all. Firstly, I apologize if this question has been asked before, which I'm sure it has. I'm only new to Linux although I have been 'dabbling' for awhile now with Ubuntu, Fedora Core 4, SimplyMEPIS, Xandros to name a few. I found Centos 4.1 on the cover disk of the September issue of APC Magazine and thought I'd give it a go. I want to learn linux and thought this one

On my Ubuntu: Next up, I connected my phone(NOKIA N73) to my computer, ensured that I am able to connect to internet on my ubuntu. wvdial works good too. Again, I am unsure how to get asterisk to connect to this modem so that I can use my soft phones to make a call. Need help. Trimming the fat out of a Centos 4.4 Installation
Hi, just to avoid re-inventing the wheel, is there any document that can help me reduce even further a "minimum" installation of Centos 4.4 (BTW can you say 600mb is minimum)? I am in the process of creating a small Centos-4.4-based Asterisk box and I need to boot it from a CF card. Deleting useless packages will help me do what i want. Example: even a minimum install of Centos 4.4 (or

KPPP: why root?
Hi All, I'm wondering about something that seems a bit odd. I've setup a CentOS 4 box for a client that is "still" using dial-up and to activate the connection appears to require root privileges. Why is this? The reason Linux was loaded on this box was to provide a very functional box that could be easily locked down so when the cat was away the mice couldn't play,
