Over 400 smbd pid's?
Over the past 2 days, my smbd processes are multiplying worse than

OSX causing multiple CLOSE_WAIT's
Lately it never fails when I attach a Mac running OSX 10.5 that I get
runaway pid's. I tracked them down so far to multiple close_wait's:
# /usr/sbin/lsof | grep pbg5mac
smbd 24876 root 6u IPv4 80015755 TCP
yoda.wrenkasky.com:netbios-ssn->pbg5mac.wrenkasky.com:49381 (CLOSE_WAIT)
They can grow to over 100 if I don't catch it or nobody can log on anymore ;-)

Since upgrading, I am getting the following every hour or so:
[2009/01/07 15:19:08, 2] printing/print_cups.c:cups_async_callback(504)
cups_async_callback: failed to read a new printer list

Are you using wins?
Try lmhosts for the start?
Are all machines on the same subnet?
Just a few hints to start with ...

have a hosts allow or hosts deny line in your smb.conf. If you don't
want samba to do reverse lookups, then comment out any allow/deny hosts
lines in your smb.conf file.
