How to do SQL queries outside of AR
Hi Everyone,
I''m trying to figure out how to do SQL queries in the Controller. I know
this is not recommended, but I can''t use ActiveRecord because I am
dealing with thousands of a different tables, one for each user, and
I don''t think AR can be made to handle that situation.
You can assign the table name; but that''s a class variable so any particular

dispatch.cgi not found error
I''m following along on the 10 minute tutorial. Accessing blog at
http://www.ampede.com/blog/ works fine. I then created Weblog using the
script/new_controller generator. When I try to access
http://www.ampede.com/blog/weblog/, I get:

Showing database results in a grid view
Hello everyone,
It seems that the answer to my question should be obvious, but I''ve not
yet found a way to do what I want. Any advice on the best method would
be greatly appreciated.
Have the following database table:
CREATE TABLE datasets (
id int not null auto increment,
name varchar not null,
value varchar not null,
year varchar not null,

Bind Variables in Active Record
OK, I have some basic functionality to support bind variables, it
appears to work with the ''old'' %s style too.
I''ve altered sanitize_conditions in
activerecord/lib/active_record/base.rb to check whether bind variables
are in the statement (/\?/). If they are, replace all the ?s to
escaped values from the arguments array. else santize and expand.
There are a few

How to find() only selected columns ?
Hello,
I don''t know anything about Rails optimization, however... is it
possible to select only specified columns in order to tell Active
Record not to load everything from the table as does @items =
Item.find(:all) ?
Thank you

Another question about the tutorial
Hello
After upgrading to ruby 1.8.2, finally got rails to install properly.
Now, following the tutorial, I found a couple of things:
First, apparently rails tries to establish local mysql connections using
"/tmp/mysql.sock"
which mandrake does not use. In mandrake 10.1, this file is located at
"/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock".
The solution is to create a simlink

Everyone wants a RoR framework
It seems like everyone now has a RoR type framework:
Perl:
http://dev.catalyst.perl.org/
PHP:
http://cakephp.org/
Python:
http://www.django.com
ASP.NET:
http://www.castleproject.org/index.php/Main_Page
etc., etc.
Has a revolution begun with the birth of these "Web 2.0" frameworks?
Its going to be interesting when the tech media begins its mass hype
like it did SOAP, XML, etc. a

Rails speed?
Hi --
(First time posting to the list...)
I''m trying out Rails on my Mac (OS X Panther, 1.6 G5). It seems...
kinda slow? I''ve even run it with FastCGI and the response time is
still painfully slow.
Is this just me? Is mod_ruby any better than FastCGI? Or is it rails?
Thanks in advance!

Write-up on RoR + XUL Sample
Hi Folks,
Just a quick message saying that, after much demand, I wrote a quick
write-up for the RoR + XUL thing I did yesterday:
http://www.zedshaw.com/blog/programming/ruby_xul.html
It lays out the few simple things I did, has a bit of rant on an
unrelated topic, and other stuff but it''s short still.
On a related note, I''d like to thank "xal" on IRC for reminding
