x84_64 distro: Really worth it ?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 I have so far avoided using the x86_64 distro, sticking to 32 bits on all my servers. My question for all using the 64bits distro is: is it really worth it ? What kind of applications are you running, and what kind of _real_ gain did you have ? Note: All my servers are 2GB RAM or less. - -- Rodrigo Barbosa "Quid quid Latine dictum sit, altum

btrfs-delalloc - threaded?
Hi all. I was doing some testing with writing out data to a BTFS filesystem with the compress-force option. With 1 program running, I saw btfs-delalloc taking about 1 CPU worth of time, much as could be expected. I then started up 2 programs at the same time, writing data to the BTRFS volume. btrfs-delalloc still only used 1 CPU worth of time. Is btrfs-delalloc threaded, to where it can use

Rails with no direct database access?
Hello all, I''m having a bit of an internal conflict here. I have a web application that I need to write (for myself). Fine, right? Well, this site is for a DNS service that has a client interface for client APIs to access. I''d like to have all application requests and data updates/retrieval to go through this interface instead of a database. Should I even use Rails for

Worth upgrading desktop to 5.1?
I am using CentOS 5.0 on my desktop workstation. Are there any deeply compelling reasons to upgrade to version 5.1? I read through the release notes but didn't see any whiz-bang new features. Perhaps some of you can share your personal experience letting us know if you have noticed any differences, etc.

is dundi worth pursuing in this situation?
At work, I have 4 branch offices at which I've deployed asterisk. Call termination/origination at each branch office is handled either through a frac PRI or 3rd party SIP provider. Soon, I'll be replacing the legacy PBX at our HQ with asterisk. Each branch office has between 3 and 20 employees, each with their own extension and DID, and at headquarters, we have about 70 people, again

Samba.. not worth a f*** for printing
Gotta love these people that appreciate all the effort the developers put in when clearly they are click and grunt experts who can't be bothered reading a manual. We got samba going and migrated a test bunch towards it printing on about 60 printers. HP drivers work a treat when it came to setting our A4 size paper but some printer drivers like Panasonic and Epson have crappy setup.exe

Are SSD disks worth the cost for server usage?
Hi, we want to upgrade our infrastructure and are considering renting two different types of server by a provider: - A: one is with 80 GB SSD (and 12 GB memory) http://www.ovh.co.uk/products/eg_ssd.xml - B: the other with 750 GB SATA2 (and 8 GB memory). http://www.ovh.co.uk/products/eg_best_of.xml The target infrastructure will host: - a few public web sites (PHP / MySQL) - a development

[LLVMdev] [3.6 Release] Time to fix the release notes
The 3.6 release is drawing nearer, but the release notes could still use a lot of improvement: LLVM: https://github.com/llvm-mirror/llvm/blob/release_36/docs/ReleaseNotes.rst Clang: https://github.com/llvm-mirror/clang/blob/release_36/docs/ReleaseNotes.rst The good news is that they can be updated all the way up until release. If you have a patch for the release notes, commit it directly to the

IAX2 trunking scalability
Hi List, I have a 2Mbps SDSL link which gets saturated during peak time because about I have about 3 E1 worth of g729 traffic going thru. So I'm planning to use IAX2 trunking to reduce bandwith requirement and squeeze out each and every bit of this (expensive) bandwith. I've set up two boxes (debian etch), one in a remote data center (which has plenty of bandwith) and one behing

Mail deduplication
Hi Guys, I am wondering about mail deduplication. I am looking into the possibility of seperating out all of the message bodies with multiple parts inside mail that is recived from `dovecot` and hashing them all. The idea is that by hashing all of the parts inside the email, I will be able to ensure that each part of the email will only be saved once. This means that attachments & common

ADSI -- is it dead? Worth bothering with?
Since Colin Anderson -- in a previous thread -- asked the question about whether ADSI was dead, I thought it was worth discussing. We've been using Nortel Vista 350s in our office up until now. The phones are from Telus, I don't know if there's any way to unlock them. It would appear Telus hasn't done much in the way of updating software for these phones; or if they have, they

[rspec] [rails] Specing a form builder
I''m trying to set up and run a new form builder under rails, which lives under the helpers directory, but isn''t really a helper. (Not a module, so doesn''t mix in well) Short of dropping down into a view spec, how do I set up to actually spec the form builder? describe RandomFormBuilder do attr_reader :builder before do @object = mock_model(Foo) @builder =

London meetup?
Following Luke''s very successful Puppet talk at GLLUG in London, which was so over-subscribed there were people queueing outside and pressing their little faces up against the glass, I wonder if the market will bear a London Puppet meet? If there are more than two or three people interested it might be worth arranging something, perhaps a pub session where we can talk about what

attr_boolean, a good idea?
Hello all, I''ve recently been working with a model with a lot of boolean attributes and I decided that it''s worth trying to implement a attr_boolean function to cut down on the work. Something like class User < ActiveRecord::Base attr_boolean :contact_by_email, :display_real_name, :administrator end which would replace the hand written class User <

howto's and docs from the forums
hi guys, just spent 20 minutes looking through the forums on the website, and it seems people are posting howtos and walkthoughs there. whats the general feeling ? is it worth getting in touch with the authors and seeing if they would like to maintain them on the wiki instead ? I know some of them are really mad and we wont / dont want to highlight them too much ( like, gnome-2.16 hacked
