Making a group membership matrix
Hi Helpers:
I have a factor object that has 314k entries of 39 land cover types.
(This object can be coerced to characters neatly should that be easier
to work with.)

nested ANCOVA
Dear R-users,
is there a chance to do an nested ANCOVA in R? I've read the archive mails
but it doesn't work.
We have the following situation:
We are interested in differences in carabid biomass at different aged
woodlands. Thus, we have a nested design with 2 fixed groups (0=recent,
1=ancient) and 10 woodlands (each with 8 replications/traps) per fixed
group. Woodland is therfore nested within the fixed variable. In an
additional step we want to calculate these procedure with a covariate called
beech (this means the...

Adonis and nmds help and questions for a novice.
Hi,
forgive me if someone has already posted about this but I have had a look and cannot find the answer, also I am very new to R and been getting the grips with this.
I have been trying to use Adonis to find out if there are significant difference between groups on data that I have analyses with NMDS, and have been struggling with getting this to work and understanding what is going on. I am

GlmmPQL help
Hi,
I'm running a GLMM on binomial choice data. The outputs I receive are
sensible except for the degrees of freedom, which come out much larger than
expected. Can anyone advise please?

Response = Choice
Fixed Factors = Position, Treatment and Sex
Random Factor = ID nested within Treatment and Sex
Covariate = Delay

Changing font in boxplots
Hi all,
I am very new to R and this might be a simple question but I have looked
everywhere you suggest before writing to you.
I am trying to change font type from san-serif to a serif (Times New
Romans) on all labels and axis of my boxplot. I have used this function in
other plots before, e.g.:
plot(residuals~lnlifespan, data=mydata, pch=psymb, font=6, xlab="ln

plotting muliple CI ellipses for EB estimates
I have empirical Bayes estimates for slopes and intercepts for a number of
subjects and I would like to plot the slopes and intercepts with confidence
ellipses. These ellipses would be based on the confidence intervals for the
slope and intercepts (forming the major and minor axis of each ellipse), and
the correlation in the slope and intercepts.

Overdispersion using repeated measures lmer
Dear All
I am trying to do a repeated measures analysis using lmer and have a number
of issues. I have non-orthogonal, unbalanced data. Count data was obtained
over 10 months for three treatments, which were arranged into 6 blocks.
Treatment is not nested in Block but crossed, as I originally designed an
orthogonal, balanced experiment but subsequently lost a treatment from 2
blocks. My

write only permissions
Hi,
We've just put in a Samba fileserver to replace our windows box for our
School District and it seems to be working great. I have a question
about defining some specific permissions though. We set up 'Drop boxes'
for teachers that kids can drag files into, but they don't have read
permission so they can't read each others submitted work. Here's what

authenticate Linux users to AD on Windows 2003R2
Hello,
I have enough details on how to have Linux users authenticate to a 2003r2
AD, but I need help getting their home dir's to automatically mount to a
windows share. Any details would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,

winbind/idmap/AD problem?
Hi,
I'm running 3.0.28a on Ubuntu 8.04 (their package). I've got security =
ads and idmap backend = ad (smb.conf is posted below). I'm using
libnss-ldap and have ldap in nsswitch.conf (also posted below) and ldap
connected to the AD server. I have the drive mounted using acl and
xattr_user options in fstab (acl is installed). I can connect to the
share, I see in the logs that

nls and geometric mean regression
Hello folks,
I'm seeking opinions about the validity of the following use of the
nls function...
A colleague and myself are working with tree allometric data
consisting of measurements of individual trees in semi-arid Australian
woodland species. We need to make predictions of trunk diameter (DBH:
diameter at breast height) given tree height and vice versa. I _think_

Posix acls problem
I'd very much appreciate some help with a rather major problem I'm having.
I have a Dell 6450 quad Xeon Processor machine with 8GB of RAM and 1TB
of disk (RAIDed with an Adaptec 5400S RAID controller). It is running
samba (2.2.8) to server up files to around 2300 Windows 2000 machines.
The machine was originally installed and configured around September 2002.

problem with unix extensions on Adaptec SNAP Server (Redhat 8)
I've recently purchased an Adaptec SNAP server to serve as a central file
server for a 2500 machine, 7000 user network. My goal is for this server
to serve as a backend file store to a number of other servers that the
client machines will communicate with. In particular, I would like to have
my current file server (which runs samba 3.0.10 in kernel 2.6.10-gentoo-r6)

Automatic printer download
Hallo!
I am running samba-3.0.10-1.4E.11 on centOS. I want to enable the
automatic printer download feature, but are running into problems.
I have tried to work it out from samba by example, but since the automatic
driver download is bundeled togehter with ldap (which I am not using),
this does not get me anywhere.
Can anyone direct me to a good howto on this - one that will make things
work! I

smbd processes loaded onto one core
Hi,
We're running 3.0.31 (yes, I know that's old!) on a dual core processor,
our kernel has SMB support and the dual core processor is recognized
correctly, yet all (300+) smbd process seem to be hitting the same core!
Is this our OS, the version of samba, something else?
Any pointers would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Steve
