WMA9 versus OGG
Hello all
I have been encoding to OGG as a default for well over a year, but I
recently thought I ought to test how it sounds compared to other codecs. I
got the Windows Media 9 encoder and I was quite surprised at how bad a job
OGG did at quality 0 with a simple piano clip, and how well WMA9 was - I've
always considered WMA as being a bit naff, but WMA9 has forced me to
re-access this view

to see if you agree or can offer any insight - shouldn't OGG beat WMA9 in
sound quality? The original is from the Lost in Translation sound trac...

I see there is a Fedora Core RPM on the icecast page - does that
indicate that Redhad would be a preferred distro to use?
What are people's experience around here that run large (20k plus
listener) icecast setups? What hardware / OSs do you use and why?
Also, can icecast relay WMA9? We decided to go with the Spacial Audio
SOS product to deal with AFTRA requirements, and it supports encoding
to mp3, mp3pro, WMA9, and OGG - is it much of a headache to have an
icecast server be able to relay mp3 and WMA9 streams at the same time?
Thanks for your help

expect the windows version to have much more serious issues, other
OSes such as linux, solaris, or *bsd should basically be fine,.

Frankly, the only reason that I'm even considering relaying WMA9 is
because a large number of listeners to the streams may not be all

I wish to see that number going down though. If Speex performs better, has smaller files, and can compete with 32kbps WMA9 encoded files, I might become interested in testing out the product, and perhaps switching over!

Updates to the "Dare To Compare" pages ?
Hi!
The "Dare To Compare" page at http://www.xiph.org/vorbis/listen.html
is pretty outdated. It is missing modern codecs like AAC+ and WMA9.
It also features MP3Enc31, which not even google can identify any more ;-)
The page also has "[an error occurred while processing this directive]"
at the top and bottom.
Regards,
David
PS: Maybe some links on the page to newer test would do,
if there is no time rework it.
