NLS results different from Excel -- Tricky fortunes nomination
...for the R fortunes package -- except that it's about Excel, not R! So I nominate it... but leave it to others to say whether it's really "qualified" to be nominated. ---- "The idea that the Excel solver "has a good reputation for being fast and accurate" does not withstand an examination of the Excel solver's ability to solve the StRD nls test problems. ... Excel solver does have the virtue that it will always produce an answer, albeit one with zero accurate digits." --- I also leave it to others to modify what is excerpted if appropriate. Cheers, Bert...

[Fwd: Re: Unable to fix corrupt directories with fsck.ocfs2]
...ll cause corruption if the filesystem is mounted read/write, even if the filesystem was not corrupted on the first place. You could mount it read only, but you risk getting a kernel panic when the filesystem suddenly changes if fsck corrects something. I am not aware of any filesystem that can withstand a online fsck. Sun ZFS can do online correction, but it doesnt have a fsck tool. bug - over system quota and dovecot-uidlist
...raded from courier pop3 to dovecot pop3 I'm constantly getting complains from users that went over system quota for short while and then their pop3 client downloads all messages again. I never happened with courier pop3. I think that dovecot does not handle dovecot-uidlist file safely so it can withstand such situations. rsync and other similar programs always writes to a copy of the file like dovecot-uidlis.xcb453 and on success unlinks old file and renames new one. Dovecot should not assume that write operation on dovecot-uidlist will succeed. Yes, I know I can put metadata like dovecot-uidlist s...

Autodial on off-hook?
I'm looking to build an application which requires a phone to autodial when the handset is lifted off of the hook. Since the system will be available to the general public, I want a solid phone that will withstand abuse, but not be too expensive. I'm leaning towards using a Sipura adapter with an analog outdoor handset. However, I don't nor ever have had a sipura adapter, so I'm wondering if anyone with access to one can tell me if you are able to set it up to place a call when the handset goes...

Dell poweredge 860 acceptable forofficeenvironment ?
...as long as: The "sealed cabinet", has enough expansion capacity for the oil to expand from heating; Has enough surface area to effectively radiate the heat that is continuously generated, (else the temperature of the oil will continue to rise . . .(sound familiar?)) The components can withstand continuous (24x7x365) immersion in a heated liquid. A solvent, basically. The oil will eventually compromise the integrity of most, if not all of the components. Not the best of ideas, IMHO joe a.

Using Match in a lookup table
...show numerous solutions to matching a lookup table to a dataset, My situation is slightly different as i have multiple lookup tables, (that i cannot merge - for integrity reasons) that i wish to match against my data, and each of these files is large, so lots of for / if conditions are not ideal. (withstanding that i have multiple files of course) For example, I have data: > v <- c("foo", "foo", "bar", "bar", "baz") > id <- c(1,2) > id2 <- c(3) > name <- c("foo", "bar") > name2 <- c("baz")...

setting default expansion mode for CVS files
I've noticed that certain binary files had been checked into cvs with the default expansion mode. For example *.png and *.bmp files. The line ending problem not withstanding, there is still the possiblity that these files can be corrupted if the binary data happens to contain byte sequences that just happen to match RCS keywords, e.g. "$Id:$", etc. For that reason, they should still be added with "cvs add -kb". There is even a better way to...

NLS results different from Excel
The idea that the Excel solver "has a good reputation for being fast and accurate" does not withstand an examination of the Excel solver's ability to solve the StRD nls test problems. Solver's ability is abysmal. 13 of 27 "answers" have zero accurate digits, and three more have fewer than two accurate digits -- and this is after tuning the solver to get a good answer. For...

calculate quantiles of a custom function
Hi, I guess that my problem has an obvious answer, but I have not been able to find it. Suppose I create a custom function, consisting of two beta-distributions: myfunction <- function(x) { dbeta(x,2,6) + dbeta(x,6,2) } How can I calculate the quantiles of myfunction? I have not seen any continous function treated in the docs, and applying the "quantile function" gives me an

Ashlee Vance's article on R in the New York Times
...gths and (considerable) limitations of the three classical statistical programming languages ( S, SAS, SPSS) , R really doesn't change anything at all. I definitely like the pricetag though. And that does not mean that R cannot achieve a quality and reliability comparable to S-Plus and SAS, not withstanding Milley's snide comment. But if you want to attack the chronic and painful productivity problems with data preparation and statistical table production, you need to go beyond R and SAS. You have to develop new user interfaces, and that is very risky, and takes years of technical work and mark...
