Slow Copy WinXX - Linux/Samba :-(
I never thought it would happen to me, but it did...
I have read threads about slow copies from WinXX to Linux/Samba on the
list in the past, but I don't recall a concise answer regarding what the
cause was.
THE PROBLEM:
Trying to copy an 8 meg file from Win95 to my Linux/Samba box (named
"Nemesis" - for good reason), the transfer speed slows to a crawl. The
Win95 copy dialog box st...

WinXX file locking on mouse over
Hi everyone,
We have found a wierd feature/bug while using Samba 2.2.4. We have gotten it
properly set up as a PDC, and have been happily using it in production for
about a month now, with very good results. It has replaced our aging WinNT
server with much more performance and no problems, other than one
inconvenience:
When a Windows user running MS Office 2k (this is all we have tested with at

Application Blocking
On my windows machine I use a software fire will called ZoneAlarm. One
feature I like Is the ability to block applications from using the net. I''ve
looked with Shorewall and wonder if it does, or was ever meant to. Not a
complaint, a curiosity.

displaying images
...to produce autoplaying avi CDs (i.e. the CD contains
an avi file
and a minimum linux system plus the mplayer so that mplayer plays
automatically the
movie after the boot using the framebuffer device) to avoid things like
bringing avis
at friend's homes just to find out that they have only M$WinXX and the
M$ MediaPlayer
won't play my avi.
Here is my problem: at the boot prompt I'd like to put an image related
to the avi content
but 16 colors are really too few colors to display almost any image :-(
while on the other
side 256 would be basically perfect for almost any image.

Corel heritage applications
I understand that the applications that Corel release for Linux are WinXX
apps tweaked to run under Wine. I have no problem with that, but it makes
me wonder what success has been achieved running Corel Win apps. Sure beats
upgrading if they still do the job you want.
The applications that interest me are:
WordPerfect version 7.0.2.19
Quatro Pro version 7.0.2....

WinME, Win2000: status
Hi all
Some time ago I asked about support of WinME and Win2000. The answer
was: not ready yet.
These days, when people enjoy VSS under Linux, I have to admit I really
need wine:)
So in a word: can I use Wine with any of these OSes? Could anyone please
point me out to the settings I need in my config file (I am especially
interested in Profile option)?
Thanks in advance

NFS
...this I am returned an error saying can't locate the address for the
server. I can smbclient \\server\share and get files that way, but I was
wondering if there is a way to mount this so it shows up in KDE as a file.
Sorry for the dumb question, and who in their right mind would want to mount a
winxx drive on a linux box. It's a long story.

Timeserver Timezone Mismatch BUG?
I am having a terrible time getting the hardware clock, system clock and
the time served to my winXX boxes to jive on my Mandrake 7.2/Samba 2.07
machine. I have my clock file, timezone and localtime links set to
America/Chicago. No matter what I do, if I use UTC for my hwclock, my
system clock on the Linux box is fine, but samba passes system time +6
hours to the windows clients. (Yes I know CST =...

Remote Win98 logging of Samba/Linux box
Sent this one in the other day but did not get a reply!
When first time logging into Samba (or share), using an dialup internet
modem connection, it seems to take between 50-70 seconds to respond to a
Windows 98 request. You can see the request leaving the modem and can count
the 50-70 seconds before the modem responds from the Linux Server box. Don't
see the same problem if I telnet, ftp or

Time Server?
List,
I've got my Samba box (RedHat 7.2) running NTP client to sync with
PARC. I want my windaz clients to be able to read time from it
automagically. Is there a way to do that? Seems like WinXX clients cannot
use NTP so can how can I sync them with my Samba box (which is accurate to
within 200 ms!)

Syslinux & Error 440D
Hi.
I'm trying to install the latest version of syslinux on a FAT12 partition on
a 16M Flash disk.
However, despire reformatting, repartioning, and running both lock c: and
fdisk /mbr, I keep receiving an "ERROR 440D: Unable to lock drive for
exclusive access" message. Do you have any suggestions on how to bypass
this problem? Please respond ASAP.
Thanks,

*** BUG? ***
Hi!
I've installed RedHat 6.1 on a Pentium 233. I'm using samba 2.0.5a which
came with RH6.1. On another PC (Pentiun-II 400) I've installed Windows
NT 4.0. These two PC's are connected to the same network. I've
configured Samba to share the home directories on the Linux System. I'm
able to reach my own homedir from NT. Within NT I've assigned this share
to drive L.

Calculating file size.
hi,
Here's an interesting one...
If I view the files on my Samba server, the file size is reported
differently depending on if I'm looking from WinXX or Win2k.
That is, if I do a 'properties' on a file with Windows ME for instance, I
see 'Size' and 'Size on Disk' numbers that seem reasonable. Size on Disk is
slightly larger which seems reasonable. But if I look from Win2k, the Size
on Disk is huge! A 30KB file will sh...

Linux, Samba, UTC and wonky time
...machines that is either GMT (with localtime set
to [no selection]) or GMT + 5 hours (with localtime set to [America/Chicago]).
The only way I can get Samba to serve the right time is to set my hardware clock
to CDT (with localtime set to [America/Chicago]).
Now Samba serves the correct time to the WinXX machines, but if I send mail from
kmail on my Linux box, all of my e-mail is time stamped CDT-5hr. or GMT. Go
figure? Somewhere and offset is getting applied in the wrong direction. I still
haven't sorted this out, but I am still working on it as time permits.
I sure wish someone had some addi...
