error in seq.POSIXt?
I am trying to extract only the winters (defined to be 01-Dec through 28-Feb) of daily data from 1948-2002. There are 90 days in each winter season. I wrote the following code to gather the winter dates into a single vector: DJF <- NULL for(year in 1949:1999) { temp.begin <- strptime(paste("01/12", year-1, sep="...

Sorting a data frame by specifying a vector
Hello all, I cannot seem to figure out this seemingly simple procedure. I want to sort a data frame by a specified character vector. So for : df.. <- data.frame(Season=rep(c("Summer","Fall","Winter","Spring"),4),Obs= runif(length(rep(c("Summer","Fall","Winter","Spring"),4)))) I want to sort the data frame

Ternary Plots Do Not Display Ellipses in PDF
A rather strange situation here and I've not found the source of the problem. The point is to print a ternary plot matrix of compositional data with ellipses enclosing 95% of the variance in each plot. The ellipses display on the monitor, dev = x11cairo (see attached winters-x11cairo.pdf), but not when sent directly to a file, dev = pdf (see attached winters-pdf.pdf). Here's winters.acomp: structure(c(0.0666666666666667, 0.0612244897959184, 0.0434782608695652, 0.043956043956044, 0.05, 0.0161290322580645, 0.6, 0.571428571428571, 0.623188405797101, 0.593406593...

Days to solstice calculation
Hello, I've come across a problem in developing a set of custom functions to calculate the number of hours of daylight at a given latitude, and the number of days a date precedes or secedes the summer solstice. I discovered an inconsistency concerning leap years between my derived values and those from the US naval databases. It seems as far as I can figure that my inconsistency arises either

alpha in Holt-Winters method
Hi, I'd like to know if the Holt-Winters function in R can modify the alpha paremeter in an "intelligent" way. I know it can vary from 0 to 1. Wich mathematical formula does it use to calculate the correct value of alpha? Thanks, bye. Carlo

nlme predict with se?
I am trying to make predictions with se's using a nlme (kew11.nlme below). I get an error indicating levels for a factor are not allowed. I have searched and read Rnews, MEMSS, MASS, R-Help, and other lists in Spanish where I found questions similar to mine but not solution. I do not really care about the method used. Any suggestions to obtain predictions with se's from an nlme

If there is none, can some one point me a good GNU/freeware to do the sales forecasting...
