...OK, I did a bit of googling and it seems that this is not just a Samba problem, see here: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/scriptcenter/en-US/b1af276f-1a12-4a78-8ea3-f49ab04844ea/the-directory-service-is-missing-mandatory-configuration-information-and-is-unable-to-determine-the?forum=winserverDS Read right to the bottom, I think the answer is there. Changing default UID/GID beginning for AD
I loved to find out how to achieve that. I did looked for information, all I found was that: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/3e184d10-09e3-4eab-9131-6694b86879f8/modify-default-value-of-loginshell-attribute?forum=winserverDS Unfortunately it seems to list all users (I don't know these MS commands but "Get-AdUser -Filter"...) then sending that list to something to modify received users list ("Set-AdObject -Replace @{unixhomedirectory='/bin/sh','bin/bash'}" and https://technet.mic...

Joining samba4 as a DC to Windows Server 2012 active directory
...in Controller with AD level 2008 R2. What do you mean by "AD level"? Forest and/or domain level? And you should check your AD schema version (https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/45f8e9b9-07b9-4af7-9eba-d87169dccc22/view-active-directory-schema-version?forum=winserverDS). If your schema is 56 or higher, then your AD contains schemas from 2012/2012 R2. Samba isn't compatible with this schemas (atm). Regards, Marc

How to update the root hints for bind DLZ
The RootDNSServers zone is special in a number of ways. It has no SOA record for instance, and so there's a lot of special casing around it. Looking on a Windows DC, dnscmd /enumzones lists dot as a zone and dnscmd /enumrecords . returns the root servers (as well as ..RootHints it seems). None of this is our choice of convention unfortunately, but it should be fairly simple to make the client
