Local library on Windoze.
I'm mystified by a Windoze ``phenomenon'' which has just bitten me.
I have a laptop which boots either Windoze or Linux; I (sad to say)
need the Windoze OS for teaching purposes. I have R 1.9.1 installed
on the laptop in the Windoze OS.
Just now I decided to install, under the Windoze version of R,
a library (``M...

WINS problem
Greetings Earthlings:
I finally convinced the LAN guy to remove NetBlooie from our
windoze clients. I also made the samba box the local and master
browser (we have no NT boxes at the moment). Local browsing seems
to have gotten faster (at least Mr. Robinson's Network Neighborhood
resolves faster). However, our LAN is isolated (windoze clients
dial out to get to the internet, r...

.Rprofile under Windoze.
I am (for my sins) having to do some work using R under Windoze. I
wanted to set up a .Rprofile to control my set-up. The docs on
.Rprofile say that it can/should be placed in ``the user's home
directory''. ``An Introduction to R'' observes lucidly that this
concept needs to be clarified under Windoze.
Following the suggestions in An Int...

OT: Photo Editor to reduce 272 photos to VGA at once
...e
for the concerts I attended. I have Picasa, gThumb (not really an
Editor but I believe it can reduce the quality of photos) and The GIMP
installed. Is there a way I can have a photo editor reduce all of them
to VGA size, without doing that 272 times? The people who will receive
them are using M$ Windoze. Also, they are in a folder and it doesn't
seem possible to attach a folder in gmail. A good way to zip them up
in one file that can be unzipped on Windoze boxes? TIA!
P.S.
I met people there who participate in the forum for my favorite
singer. I suspect it would be equally interesting, to me...

ldap authentification suddenly fails partially
hi !
my systems started to behave weird today.
i am running a debian/linux-fileserver (woody/2.4.18) that exports the
user-homes and acts as a PDC via samba (2.2.4 --with-ldapsam) to my
windoze-clients (w2k/nt).
i am using ldap as authentification database.
everything worked like a charme, until today.
suddenly some users cannot authenticate against the windoze-machines any
more.
other users still work !

-they can log in under unix (against the posixAccount in their LD...

Problem with installing home-made package under Windoze.
...a package of ``supplementary'' time series functions
for use by my students in a time series course. The package involves
only raw R code; no dynamic loading to complicate matters. I need to
install this package in a location on a local area network where the
students can access it under Windoze.
In the past I learned that I could do this by:
o installing the package under Linux
o changing directories to the local library
o executing
zip -r9l ts.sup.zip ts.sup
o uploading the resulting ts.sup.zip file to a convenient
Windoze-running machine
o excuting

Quake II - a modal problem?
I am running FC2 on a Dell 600SC, latest wine version. FYI:Quake II
will run on machines with only 4 MB video cards and no OpenGL. It runs
fine under Windoze. Under Wine it runs the "launching demo" well but
then I have no keyboard or mouse control. I must force the power off to
regain control. On Windoze one would hit the escape key at this point
and a menu screen appears with Game, Options, Video etc.
Any ideas as to the cause/solution...

Asterisk Assistants for Linux or Windoze???

It wouldn't make sense to create Asterisk Assistants for
Windoze (it'd probably be called Asterisk Wizards, btw)
because Asterisk doesn't run on Windoze.
As for Linux, we are currently looking into that.
The Assistants are built using the Cocoa framework which
is a further development of NeXTStep/OpenStep. I am
currently playing with a tool called the...

printer vendors' windoze 3.1x drivers
Hi,
I'm wondering if I could (ab)use wine for
transparently printing from linux via the
vendors' win 3.1x printer drivers. I'll need
that for a proslide 35 film recorder and an
epson 980 inkjet with the best (photo) output
quality available with windoze (from 3.1x)
drivers only.
There is, of course a hardware solution using
ghostscript's mswinpr2 (windoze GDI) and a
physical win3.1x / win32s machine.
But could wine run the printer driver? How to
pipe GDI printer data from a linux ghostscript
mswinpr2 to the vendor's driver?
Or, alterna...

Samba PDC windoze BDC
Hi,
During my migration to samba, I had kind of assumed
that I could run Samba as a PDC and my windoze server
as a BDC to ease the migration path a little and still
keep the same domain. I was going to use samba 2.2.5
on the PDC and NT4 sp6 on the BDC. After reading quite
a bit, it looks as though this doesn't work?
Is there a way to make it work?
Does Samba 3 handle this?
Is Samba 3 stabl...

How do I get the necessary binutils on Windoze? Install
MinGW or Cygwin. But if I do that, then I may as well use
MinGW for everything and not bother with LLVM.
Our frontend compiler can generate C code as input to a C
compiler (such as GCC in MinGW) and use the C compiler as a
backend solution. Alternatively our frontend compiler could...
