Samba 3.0 Alpha 23 and windbindd
Hi folks, I've been using the samba alpha releases for a bit now. I'm really satisfied and grateful as it really helps out in our infrastructure. I do however experience an issue that is really stumping me. The problem exists in the mapping of winbind GID/UIDs to names. From time to time, the GID will just change. For example, in our environment, the Group JCNTV/Domain Admins is

Is windbindd necessary?
Is it necessary? I am also confused as to what it does. If I disable it in the smb.conf file, I can not say I see any difference. I am running 6 XP pro clients, MDK 9.2 as the file server. Samba3 : windbindd log missing failing user name
Question : how can I get the name of the user in the winbindd log if user fails authentication ? I'm running a FreeBsd 6 server with Postfix Dovecot Cyrus-Sasl Samba3 The primary task of the server is running a mail server wich autheticates users against a AD (W2003 server). Everything works fine. Users can access authenticated mail services (sending and receiving) with local or remote (AD)

windbindd / AD / DNS Updates
Hello * Volker, thank you for your fast help / answer :-) !!! different question: is there a (nonzero possibility, that an vendor provided samba ( SLES11 SP1 ) could try to trigger DNS Updates, in spite of the server role cited below: testparm Load smb config files from /etc/samba//smb.conf Server role: ROLE_DOMAIN_MEMBER even if no DNS related config is done, and thus /etc/resolv.conf

L2tp and winbind - server role active directory domain controller

I put this line in the end of l2tp conf file: ntlm_auth-helper '/usr/bin/ntlm_auth --helper-protocol=ntlm-server-1 --require-membership-of="domain\\VPN"' But I get this in the log.windbindd: server role = 'active directory domain controller' not compatible with running the winbindd binary. You should start 'samba' instead, and it will control starting the internal AD DC winbindd implementation, which is not the same as this one And seem to me group restriction do...

Windbindd restarts and lost uids
We have a problem with our setup that exposed another problem in winbindd. Setup: Samba 3.0.1, openLDAP 1.2.23 for idmap backend using port 1389, security=ads (w2k). All works after we get the daemons started successfully. The first issue has to do with the initial setup of both a Samba server [smbd, nmbd, winbindd, slapd], and a Samba client [just nmbd and winbindd]. We do the

Why am I getting login failures for domain members?
...18/06/04 18:51:21.891422, 0] ../source3/nmbd/nmbd_namequery.c:109(query_name_response) Jun 4 18:51:21 ccarter nmbd[1310]: query_name_response: Multiple (2) responses received for a query on subnet 192.168.0.60 for name HPRS<1d>. Perhaps this is all normal and as expected. Still, why is windbindd requesting a password for the computer itself (CCARTER$)? What is this password? I've certainly never set a computer password (that I know of) and it is certainly not the login user's password. If this is all "normal", fine, I won't worry about it. But, I'm curious as to...

Domain reconnection after network outage. (ME too)
...ivers (http://article.gmane.org/gmane.network.samba.general/61240/) but I cant find any answer to his question. After a network outage the samba server can't "reconnect" even after a _reboot_ of the whole server. I'm running Debian stable Samba 3.0.14a-3. winbind uid range missing or invalid
Hello ... I am trying to run winbindd on my SuSE LINUX V8 system. When I start windbindd I eventually get the following message: 'winbind uid range missing or invalid' then winbindd ends. I noticed that I am not the only person getting this message. When I search "google.com" for this message, many others are getting this message. However I have not found any an...

chgrp "Domain Admins" on folder return invalid group "Domain Admins"
...bind to user and group line and execute winbindd command. As i install samba4 from sernet package, init script are created for starting AD, smbd, nmbd and winbindd. But i read that smbd, nmd and winbindd should be disable to start samba4 in AD mode. There were even a Warning that were generated if windbindd service were kept started. So I do not touch them, as they are disabled. But after making nsswitch.conf changes, I am able to execute chgrp "domain admins" /home/demo succesfully and ls -l /home display the permission with the suitable group. wbinfo -u also return the users created from...

Winbindd dies instantly
...figure this out on my own. Can someone give me some pointers on where to look in order to fix this? First off, smbd and nmbd seem to work just fine (as is to be expected), but winbindd dies instantly. This is how I've gone about it: $ sudo service samba start Everything starts. But windbindd stops. $ sudo net join ads -U administrator Joined domain DOMAIN. $ sudo service samba restart Everything starts, but winbindd stops again. output from winbindd: winbindd version 4.1.16 started. Joining a domain
...what circumstances will samba (and family) require an >> explicit "net join"? > > See 1. > What do you mean with "and family"? By "and family" I was conceding that I do not know what software it is that is requires domain join. Maybe it's samba or windbindd or something else. I can see already your response "no software requires that you join a domain -- that is a personal decision up to a human and not up to a computer." Which brings us back to my original question number 1 above. >> 3a. Is a file added to the hard drive? > >...

sssd not a good idea
...onally interoperated with many, and did our best to be an inclusive platform. > There is also the little problem that Red-Hat no longer supports the use > of sssd with Samba Well Samba made windbind necessary to run, that doesn't mean Red Hat does not support running SSSD for NSS while windbindd runs for smbd authentication purposes. In fact we allow that by using the sssd_idmap plugin in winbindd. > Whilst I accept that there is nothing wrong with sssd and that people > have made it work with Samba, this is not the mailing list to discuss > any possible problems I do not agre...
