...ear to be valid.please choose another. When I try to set up a "network place" \\server\home\steve The win98 & XP boxes are sharing & the win98 boxes are picking up the samba shares. The XP installation is pretty much default & nothing clever done with it except running the win98_plainpassword.reg which seems OK as this is what opened the win 98 shares. Any gotchas I am missing? [SUMMARY] incorrect password in Windows 98
...following people for taking the time to respond: Jonh P. Nelson and Andreas Grupp. The solution of the problem was very simple. Nelson wrote: Windows NT with SP 3 or later and Windows 98 do not allow unencrypted passwords without a registry patch. Apply the patch (from the Samba docs directory): Win98_PlainPassword.reg to each Win98 system. (The patch is included in the SAMBA distribution) Alternatively, use encrypted passwords on your Samba system. See ENCRYPTION.txt for more information. Of course, this means that you can't use the unix password file anymore (since NT password encryption and Unix pa...

Windows 98 and samba
I have a samba version 2.0.7 server running on Linux that has been happily supplying public (guest) shares to six Windows 95 workstations for about 2-1/2 years. I am now trying to add two workstations running Windows 98 and I can't connect to the samba server. I can see it in the Network Neighborhood, but whenever I try to browse any shares it asks for a password. No matter what I try, I

Some computers can't connect to Samba
I have been put in charge of an Intel Linux machine that is running Samba. Most of the people on our team are able to connect to the server without any problems, but a few of have difficulties. I, myself, am running NT 4.0 with service pack three. When I first boot up my NT computer, if I need to access the Samba server, it will ask me for my user name and password. I have to enter my user

Would you please tell me where to get help. I'm not the ordinary person who will ask for it and bother you just because it isn't convenient to learn from your docs. I CANNOT use Samba because it fails to let me into my Linux server which is running it from my Windows98 network neighborhood icon. It keeps requiring a password. I keep doing what all the docs say to change the password.

2.2alpha3 problems
I'm very puzzled by whats happening here. I've setup samba 2.2a3 acording to how it said to. Everythings looks fine. testparm reports 0 errors, all 10 of the samba services load w/o complaint, I can even get a list of shares/servers using smbclient -NL. Here's the output of smbclient -NL: [root@provo log]# smbclient -NL provo added interface ip=64.122.31.38 bcast=64.122.31.39

We're using Samba 3.0.21a-1 on a CentOS 4.2 server (kernel 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp); everything works more or less fine, it's functioning as the PDC with an OpenLDAP back end (setup essentially straight from the Idealx.org playbook), etc. We're trying to mount Windows shares to back them up, and getting "permission denied" errors when trying to read certain files from those
