Neuling

help for windows 98
I'm writing because I had a problem with Samba, while installing it on some of our computers with Windows 98 (beta 3). We have an internal network not accessible from the outside, in which we use the sending in the clear (I.E. not encrypted) of the access passwords to Samba running on a Sun machine with Unix Solaris OS. We use unencrypted passwords because Windows 95 doesn't support

Win 98
I am using samba-1.9.16p2-2 on Linux. Have used it for about 2 years with no problems. None. I have several Win95 units that access it. I loaded Win98 on one of the units and now I can browse the directories but I cannot enter any directory that requires a password. Win98 reports that the password is incorrect. I might add that Win98 also gets stuck in one of Microsofts loops in that since it

I know > the reg-key works with win95; can anyone else confirm it works with > win98? > I do. The win95 patch (Win95_PlainPassword.reg) works for win98 too. BTW: Since 1.9.18, Samba uses an built-in encryption code. There is no need to re-compile and link with libdes any more (Follow ENCRYPTION.txt). Ludolf

WIN 98 password problem (again)
...rds by default. To make a Win98 box and a Samba talk to each other, there are 2 options: (1) Switch the the samba box (and all the rest of the network) to encrypted passwords (see ENCRYPTION.TXT). (2) Switch the Win98 box to plain-text passwords. To do so, open the Win98 explorer, doubleclick on Win95_PlainPassword.reg (part of the Samba distribution). The NT registry keys don't work for Win9x (yet). I recommend option (2) for now and use the "update encrypted" switch in smb.conf to build the password database. This should ease a later switch to option (1) (Szekely's box will not remain th...

win98 access to samba
TWIMC, I have a situation in which I can access my samba servers with win95 machines but not win98 PCs. When I double click on the server using the browse list under win98, it prompts me for a password to access //SERVER_NAME/IPC$ but denies me access after entering the password. I get accepted with no problem at this prompt with win95. I compiled with the defaults and shared the

Samba and Microsoft DFS
Has anyone tried DFS Client SW on a Win 95 machine and then tried to mount the usual samba drives? All I get is a login request that gets refused even with known, correct, credentials. Its appears just the same as the problem we got after installing SP3 on an NT4 machine before changing the registry. The only way to fix it is, on the 95 machine, to remove the DFS client, remove ALL the network

security = server & encrypted passwords
Folks, I've missed the latest encrypted passwords thread, so forgive me if this is old hat for some of you. I'm running 2.0.3 with auth being handled by an NT PDC. It seems that some Win95 clients (namely those with later releases of the OS) have problems authenticating. I've got encrypt passwords = yes but it still seems only the old Win95 clients (clear text passwords) can auth

We're using Samba 3.0.21a-1 on a CentOS 4.2 server (kernel 2.6.9-22.0.2.ELsmp); everything works more or less fine, it's functioning as the PDC with an OpenLDAP back end (setup essentially straight from the Idealx.org playbook), etc. We're trying to mount Windows shares to back them up, and getting "permission denied" errors when trying to read certain files from those
