mixed model question and using lmer
i am analyzing some data and have a question i hope someone can
answer.
i want to use this sort of model:
lmer( y ~ x + (1 | ID ), family=binomial, weight=w)
so i want to explore the relationship between y and x, with a random
effect for each patient.
my question is this. is this a sensible model to use when the number
of observations for each patient ID is often one? I have 305
observations

ActiveRecord setting IDs on auto increment fields
Hi All, I''ve tried to do my searches, but can''t find reference to
this anywhere - My question is about ActiveRecord inserts and IDs. I
have a join table that both the models of the source tables join with
"has_and_belongs_to_many". It seems like ActiveRecord is setting the
"id" field for the join table- This should be an auto_increment and

IANA Reserved Addresses Tool
Andy Wiggin has contribued a Python program that reads
http://www.iana.org/assignments/ipv4-address-space and creates a list of
reserved subnets suitable for inclusion in /etc/shorewall/rfc1918. The
list produced by Andy''s program will be included in the rfc1918 file
included in version 1.3.2 (it''s available now from CVS).
Thanks Andy!

KVM VM traffic over host's Tinc VPN
Hello Tinc list!
I'm trying to set up a Tinc VPN between two KVM host machines so that a
VM on one host can communicate with a VM on the other host. While I do
have a good bit of experience with virtualization, I'm not a
particularly savvy network guy, so this is proving to be a pretty big
challenge.
Requirements:
* ALL VM network traffic must be secure.
* VMs on one host must be

...ynch without ASIO. In fact some new soundcards with WDM drivers are still not in synch. Use ASIO with Windoz.
Decoders are a problem. There are only 3 decoders which nearly meet the definition of a Classic Ambisonic Decoder and hence perform at least as well as the old hardware decoders.

Re : Ambisonics in Ogg Vorbis
...tforward. It only remains for a DSP guru to implement this for a common multi-channel player like VideoLAN or Windoz Media Player.
Sebastien Olter is doing some code which will be useful towards this end.
Windoz Media Player already has a good Ambisonic B-format to speaker decoder courtesy Bruce Wiggins' WAD
http://sparg.derby.ac.uk/SPARG/Staff_BW.asp
These should work with any DirectShow capable players too.
If you are a DSP guru planning to do this for Windoz Media Player, please contact Bruce to make sure your decoder will feed WAD correctly in WMP.

patch to fix non-echo tty on scp SIGINT
A long-time missing feature (or bug, depending on how you look at it) is
that a Ctrl-C at the password prompt in scp does not restore the
terminal settings, thus dropping you to the command prompt without any
keyboard echo. (A "reset" command will fix it.) This is a pretty
regular occurance for me, and some others I've talked to - usually when
you realize that the scp command you

Scheduled tasks in Rails: Cron + wget = Best solution?
Hi there,
do you agree that for having scheduled tasks in Rails, the leanest
solution is the following?
- Create a controller with an action for each task
- Implement the logic of the task as controller code
- Set up a cron job at the OS level that uses wget to invoke the URL of
this controller/action at the appropriate time intervals
Advantages:
1) full access to all your Rails objects just as

5.1 surround channel coupling
It obviously would be nice to have such a mode available, for e.g. DVD audio
compression. Apparently, the list doesn''t tell me too much about it. My
questions are:
1. What is the current status of the 5.1 channel coupling in Vorbis?
2. If I''ll be interested in participation in its development, what is the
recommended reading?

requesting advice on integrating openssh & solaris secure RPC
Hi:
I am new to the list and new to developing secure applications.
I have been reading the archives to see if anyone has integrated
openssh with solaris 8 secure RPC. It doesn't look like there is
any support to do this openssh.
I have started on a preliminary patch to openssh-2.5.2p2 to
automatically authenticate secure rpc using the same password
used by sshd to authenticate the

NT timestamps; WINS lookup
Two questions. First, timestamps seem to be getting screwed up when I
access files on the company's NT server. Someone (using NT) creates some
files. My ls -l output shows them as having screwed up dates (ie, 1935,
2027, etc). 95, 98, and NT users see the dates as normal. When I copy
any files with cp, the dates change for me, although remain nonsensical,
but now the timestamp is also

Using winemaker / building wine DLLs
Hi.
I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this question, or if the
wine-devel list is more appropriate; please let me know if I should ask
over there.
I'm trying to build, using winemaker/winegcc/etc, a DLL for use with a
Windows binary. This is a somewhat unusual case, in that this library is
actually explicitly being written for a Windows binary that will run in
Linux (I'm

exec()'ing Linux applications from Wine
This may sound like a strange request, but I'm currently investigating
how to execute Linux executable files from wine. The use case for this
is that I play a lot of games on Steam, as well as a number of
Linux-native games. I would like to be able to add the Linux games as
'non-Steam' games so that Steam keeps track of how long I play them, and
so friends can see what games I'm

building on Red Hat 5.2
Hi,
I'm trying to build samba 2.0.5a on Red Hat 5.2. It originally came with
1.9something, which seemed to have some bugs accessing large mounted
directories. I downloaded Red Hat's updates package, but unfortunately it
only comes with smbclient and smbd, and what I need is smbmount and
smbumount. My binaries from my more recent systems (RH6 and OL2.2) won't
run due to
